Ten people have applied to fill the school board vacancy left when District 5 representative Vince Chowdhury resigned in August.
The applicants are: Jamie Adler Rodriguez, Larry Eigel, Mary Everson, Tina Francone, Spencer Larkin, Charles Marquez, Paula Noonan, Alonzo Rodriguez, Richard Rush and Susan Settanni.
The Jeffco Public Schools Board of Education declared a vacancy Aug. 21 when Chowdhury resigned his seat. Chowdhury, a board member since 2001, quit after pressure from the community to step down after a June arrest and subsequent guilty plea for slapping his 16-year-old daughter. He pleaded guilty to third-degree assault and was given a one-year deferred sentence and ordered to attend anger management classes.
Applicants had to submit a letter of interest, proof of residence and a resume by Sept. 3. The board is required to fill Chowdhury's seat by Oct. 20, 60 days after the vacancy was announced.
Board President Scott Benefield said the board will meet Sept. 11 to discuss the applicants and hopefully screen some of them based on the applications. Interviews will take place Sept. 18, prior to the regular board meeting, and a week or two after that the replacement will be sworn in, Benefield said.
"We just want to make sure the person cares about kids, and cares about schools," Benefield said.
