Jeff Broome, philosophy instructor at Arapahoe Community College, has been selected as the ACC faculty member of the year by the ACC Faculty Senate. Broome was recognized on Feb. 9 at a State Board for Community Colleges and Occupational Education meeting.

Broome came to ACC in 1985. During his time at the college, Broome has been instrumental in building the philosophy department. He was the primary writer of the model philosophy syllabi for many of the college’s philosophy courses and created ACC’s philosophy club. In addition, he pioneered a course in philosophy of religion based on the work of theologian John Hick and was one of the first faculty members to convert his classes to an online format, while also making his lectures available for students to download on iTunes.
“I am honored to be selected as faculty of the year and grateful to my fellow faculty members who voted me to this position and especially to my students who have made my career at ACC such a rewarding experience,” Broome said.
Broome has been an active member on numerous college committees as well as the Colorado Community College System’s State Faculty Curriculum Committee. He has published more than 20 academic articles and several books, including “Dog Soldier Justice: The Ordeal of Susanna Alderdice in the Kansas Indian War” and “Custer into the West.” His book “Dog Soldier Justice” has been sought out by some of the most prestigious colleges worldwide. He is also the recipient of the Lawrence A. Frost Literary Award from the Little Big Horn Associates. In 2009, he published “Hume’s New Scene of Thought” and the “Several Faces of David Hume in the Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion.”
Born in Pueblo, Broome earned his bachelor’s degree from Colorado State University-Pueblo, his master’s degree from Baylor University and his doctorate degree in philosophy from the University of Colorado Boulder. Prior to coming to ACC, Broome worked as a detention counselor with the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Department, and as the treatment director and chaplain for the Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center in Denver.
