The Chatfield Chargers are heading into the state hockey playoffs with a full head of steam.
In its regular-season finale, Chatfield topped host Mullen 8-3 on Feb. 16 at the Edge Ice Arena. The win was the fourth consecutive for the Chargers, who’ve outscored their opponents 31-6 since a Feb. 4 loss to Ralston Valley.
“We switched the lines up four games ago, and it seemed to spark them,” Chatfield head coach Mark Glombecki said. “Early in the season they were all one-goal games, and all of a sudden we got things rolling offensively. We’ve been on a roll ever since.”
The three goals scored by Mullen broke a three-game streak for Chatfield of allowing just one goal per game in victories against Dakota Ridge (10-1), Bishop Machebeuf (6-1) and Steamboat Springs (7-1).
The Chargers (12-6-1) couldn’t have hit their stride at a better time with the playoffs beginning this week.
“We did what we had to do today. It wasn’t pretty, but we did what we had to do to win,” Chatfield captain Trey Johnson said.”Hopefully, we can take what we brought into the last couple games into the playoffs.”
Johnson was one of eight Chargers to score a goal against the Mustangs. Teammates Jeff Dawkins and Tyler Seltenreich each added a goal and two assists. Goalie Ryan Seltenreich made 27 saves.
