Two-and-a-half miles are all that lies between Chatfield and Dakota Ridge high schools.

But, Thursday night it seemed a lot closer.

A large crowd gathered in the bleachers at Chatfield Senior High School to cheer on both wrestling teams. Any spectator would have thought the two schools were just across the street from one another since the volume kept increasing along with each weight class.

Chatfield went on to defeat Dakota Ridge, 53-29, but the enthusiasm in the stands and on the mat never wavered.

“Against Dakota, we just come in expecting it to be a tough match,” said Chatfield senior Alan Fredrickson. “This rivalry is always a good one.”

Fredrickson pinned Todd Brist in 2 minutes, 32 seconds in the 160-pound match.

“We were just going back and forth in the first (period) but then in the second (period) I rolled him through and dominated,” Fredrickson said. “I wasn’t using very good technique when we started, but in the end I pulled it off and pinned him.”

The longest matches of the night were in the 135- and the 145-pound weight classes. In the 135-pound match, Chatfield sophomore Cory Wittwer pinned Kyle Reichenbach in 5:04. At 145, Chatfield junior Jerry Crites pinned Jeremy Gibson in 5:15.

One of the most exciting matches was in the 152-pound weight class. Chatfield’s Aaron Paz and Dakota Ridge’s Ryan Tuggle were pretty evenly matched. Neither wrestler strictly dominated and it looked as if the match would end in a decision. At the 4:28 mark, Paz won by a technical fall.

“I wrestled him at some point last year and I won by one point,” Paz said. “He was really good at working off of his shoulders and he was pretty lengthy so I had a hard time with that.”

Dakota Ridge won five matches, two of those on forfeits at the 215 and 275 weight classes. At 119 pounds, Stas Kardas pinned Chatfield’s Dakota Thayer in 3:15. At 130, the Eagles’ Conner Cordova won by a technical fall over Jeff Barela. And, at 171 Steve Martinez pinned Zach Teriault in 1:28.

“I expected us to be able to win,” Dakota Ridge’s Martinez said. “The key pins went to them and it just didn’t go our way. I think we could’ve beat them, but it was just their night in their house.”
