Have you looked around a bit lately? No? Than take a peek. Go by the nearest high school or golf course. Chances are you’ll see a golfer, a football player or a runner cross your path. It is August after all.
You know what that means? With school on the horizon — hard to believe, I know — high school athletics are here again, too.
It seems as if the summer just flew by. In a lot of ways, it did. I blinked and seemingly missed it. And though it’s still a wee bit warm out there, for me at least, there’s no better time of the year.
Don’t get me wrong, I love summer. To me, there aren’t too many things better than a relaxing afternoon on the beach. And, yes, for the first time in quite some time, I actually got to do that this year in beautiful San Diego. But I would trade that in for the fresh smell of autumn, walking the sidelines of a high school football game any day of the week.
Aug. 5 was the official start of the high school season with practice beginning for boys golf programs. Most of the teams are still ironing out their final roster with tryouts this week, but it won’t be long before the season begins. Columbine tees things up Aug. 12 in the Greeley West Spartan Invitational, then we’ll see Chatfield, Dakota Ridge, Evergreen, Conifer, Littleton and Front Range Christian as well. From there we’re off.
Some football teams will be holding camps this week in preparation for the opening of practice Aug. 12. Practice officially begins that day for eight other sports and activities, including cross country, boys soccer and spirit teams.
Softball games roll out the weekend of Aug. 16-17, then boys tennis, gymnastics, volleyball and so forth.
Considering how hot it gets it may be too warm for some of our athletes to be out there, but, rest assured, the weather will cool off and the high school sports will heat up. Shoot, before we know it we’ll be crowning fall sports champions, the winter weather will chill the air and we’ll be turning the corner to spring.
OK, let’s not rush it. After all, we’re just getting started. But it will be fun to see our young men and women out there on the playing surface again. It will be good to chat with our area coaches about the upcoming seasons. It will be nice to touch base with the athletic directors and athletic secretaries who work so hard to organize high school athletics in our area. I can’t wait.
And, yes, it will be a roller-coaster ride from now through the end of May when the spring sports season wraps up, but would we have it any other way? Probably not.
Enjoy the 2013-14 season folks. It’s upon us.
