The Jeffco district attorney’s office is warning parents and children to be cautious when using social media sites like Instagram.
The DA’s Child Sex Offender Internet Investigations Unit has received complaints from parents and children about strangers leaving sexually explicit comments directed at children on the site.
Sites like Instagram allow users to alter and share pictures they’ve taken. Users can see other people’s photos and leave comments.
But they can also see personal information, depending on what
privacy filters the site provides and have been activated by the user.
The DA’s office said that children frequently will use their real names and telephone numbers to set up an account.
“Teenagers, and adults as well, should be very cautious when joining sites such as Instagram,” District Attorney Pete Weir said in a news release. “Consider the personal information you are posting online. This information, as well as photos, becomes public for anyone to see.”
