A Dakota Ridge High School teacher has been placed on paid leave while Jeffco Public Schools investigates whether any district policies were violated in connection with allegations that the teacher had sex with a former student.

According to Lakewood police spokesman Ty Countryman, police have determined the male student was 18 years old at the time and that no laws were broken.

Lakewood police got involved because the teacher lives in Lakewood, Countryman said. When police started getting calls from the media, they talked to the student and determined he was 18 and that the sex was consensual.

The report initially came to the attention of the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, which heard about the allegation in a "Safe-to-Tell" report, Countryman said.

Jeffco Schools spokeswoman Lynn Setzer confirmed the female teacher was on paid leave and that the student graduated from Dakota Ridge. She said the district was conducting an investigation as part of its "due diligence."
