Ute Meadows Evening of the Arts

Ute Meadows Elementary School is hosting its annual Evening of the Arts, where every child is a star. The school will display beautiful framed artwork from each student. Poetry is read and children perform music and drama. The evening is semi-formal and is enjoyed by all. The event will be from 6 to 8:30 p.m., Friday, May 2.

Spring Carnival and Silent Auction

Collegiate Academy of Colorado will host its Spring Carnival and Silent Auction from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on May 10. The carnival will be on school grounds at 8420 S. Sangre de Cristo Road, near West Chatfield Avenue and South Kipling Parkway in Littleton. It is open to the public and will feature live music, food and local business booths, bouncy amusements for the kids, a silent auction (just in time for Mother’s Day), a kid’s talent show and carnival booths and games. See Bradford run, see Bradford read

The teachers of Bradford Primary and Intermediate Schools will host a run/walk at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 17. Registration forms are available at either school office. The cost to participate is $25 for adults, $15 for children, or $60 for a family of four. Each entrant receives a T-shirt and a raffle ticket for the chance to win a hot-air balloon ride. You may also donate the registration fee and receive a T-shirt. The run is 5K and the family walk is one mile. Funds raised will go toward the purchase of new guided-reading materials for each grade level at both schools. The school is at located in the Ken-Caryl Valley, 2 Woodruff Drive, Littleton. Chatfield Senior High open house

The Chatfield Senior High School After Prom committee invites all friends and community members to an open house from 7 to 8:45 p.m. Saturday, April 26. Come by and see how the school is transformed into a safe, alcohol-free party for all CSH juniors, seniors and their dates.

Information night for JeffcoNet

JeffcoNet Academy is the Jefferson County School District's online high school program serving grades 9-12. McLain High School will host a general information meeting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 29, and Thursday, June 12, at the school, 13600 W. Arts contest for high-schoolers

An Artistic Discovery is an arts competition for high school students in the 6th Congressional District. Each school may submit a total of six entries, and each student may submit one. Artwork must be two-dimensional, no larger than 30 inches by 30 inches unframed or 32 inches by 32 inches framed, and within the following categories: painting (oil, watercolor, acrylics, etc.); drawings (pencil, pen and ink, pastels, charcoal, crayon); and prints (lithographs, silk screens, monotypes, woodcuts and intaglio methods). No photographs or collages will be accepted. The entry may not reproduce an image from a third party's work in the same or any other medium. Youth girls basketball camp

D’Evelyn High School will be sponsoring a youth girls basketball camp for girls entering grades 3-7. Teacher of the year

Nominations for the Colorado 2007-08 Teacher of the Year are being accepted through April 30. Teachers, students and parents can nominate any of the state’s more than 58,000 accredited teachers. Nomination forms are available at www.teachers.com. (scroll down on the left hand side and click on teacher of the year). To nominate an educator, or yourself, explain in 250 words or less why this teacher should be Teacher of the Year. Winners will be announced at the start of the next school year.

Choice enrollment

Jefferson County families who wish to enroll their children in a school other than their neighborhood school now have that option. Any student in Colorado may enroll in any Jeffco Public School that has classroom space. To access a choice enrollment form, visit http://jeffcoweb.jeffco.k12.co.us/enrollment. Fill out the form and submit it to the school of choice. A second round will remain open through Aug. 30. Students are accepted by each school on a first come, space available basis. Before- and after-school programs

Foothills Park and Recreation District offers before- and after-school programs. Children may explore a variety of activities that stimulate learning and imagination, encourage physical skill development, and provide homework time. Nine locations are licensed by the Colorado Department of Human Services to provide a safe, caring environment at the school site. Before-school care starts at 6:45 a.m., and after-school care runs from the end of the school day to 6 p.m. Care is also provided on days with no school or on partial days. Health insurance available for kids

The Jefferson County Department of Health and Environment encourages families without health insurance for their children to apply for Child Health Plan Plus (CHP+). The CHP+ program allows low-income families to get health insurance for their children at affordable rates. The program is available for children 18 years of age and younger. Applications for CHP+ area available at the Jefferson County Department of Health and Environment's Arvada and Lakewood sites. Eligibility for the program is based on financial qualification. FOREIGN EXCHANGE PROGRAMS

• The Academic Foundation for International Cultural Exchange is looking for individuals to work as community representatives. The community representatives find host families and work with students during the school year. For more information, call Anne Ring at 866-462-3423.

• Local volunteer host families are needed to share their homes with high school exchange students. Students have their own insurance for medical needs and spending money for personal needs.
