Hambleton leads state wrestling qualifiers

Following is a list of Chatfield and Columbine wrestlers who qualified for the 5A state wrestling tournament via their top-four finish at the Region 1 tournament Feb. 10-11 at Pine Creek High School in Colorado Springs and the Region 3 tournament at Bear Creek High School in Lakewood:

132 pounds: Erik Gaytan, Chatfield, 3rd place
— The CU-bound track and field star scored a 7-2 decision in the consolation finals over Doherty’s Thaddeus Hayes.\

170: Justin Hambleton, Chatfield, 1st place
— Hambleton was the area’s lone regional champion, winning a 5-3 decision over Colton Fries of Legend.

182: Cory Cordova, Chatfield, 3rd place
— Cordova placed third with his consolation-round final victory over Jack Lindsay of Douglas County. Cordova won by decision 12-7.

195: Ryan Berg, Chatfield, 4th place
— Berg reached the consolation-round finals before being upended by Jacob of Moorehead of Arapahoe in 1 minute, 49 seconds.

145: Hank Hammond, Columbine, 4th place
— Hammond advanced to the consolation-round finals before being outscored 9-4 by Fruita Monument’s Isaac Rodriguez.

182: Nick Hoffschneider, Columbine, 4th place
— Hoffschneider, who won the 5A Jeffco League championship this season, reached the consolation-round finals before falling in 2:03 to Jessie Crowe of Hinkley.

220: Brian Mayberry, Columbine, 4th place
­— Mayberry bounced back in the consolation bracket to force a wrestleback match with Abraham Lincoln’s Donovan Roybal, beating him to secure a late spot to state.
