Hours changing at Littleton post offices

Four locations will reduce hours of operation

Littleton’s five post offices will adjust their hours starting April 1 as part of a metro-wide review of postal operations.

The reductions are part of a normal review of the post office’s retail operations, said David Rupert, the U.S. Postal Service’s Colorado spokesman.

“We regularly review our traffic flow. We look at when our customers come in, what kind of transactions we do, and when we get the most bang for our buck,” Rupert said. “Just like any retail establishment, you want to be there when the customers are there.”

Rupert said about 60 post offices in the metro area will see their hours change.

“It’s something we do regularly,” Rupert said. “We’ve expanded and decreased hours at location by location, depending on what’s working for the community and that clientele.”

The Postal Service looks at when people use a branch, along with the types of transactions, and how often. Twenty people buying a roll of stamps isn’t the same as 20 people sending out express and international mail, Rupert said.

“It’s not arbitrary. They’re very serious to make sure we’re there when the people are there,” Rupert said.

While Rupert said the changes are not part of a nationwide move to adjust hours, he did acknowledge that, given the financial issues it is facing, the U.S. Postal Service needs to be operating as efficiently as possible.

Yet he also pointed to the numerous places where people can get stamps, including online and at some grocery and drug stores, as well as Wells Fargo ATMs, as a reason post office hours are being reduced.

“People are finding other ways to purchase their postal products, and that’s a good thing,” Rupert said.

The reductions in hours will actually help improve delivery time for carriers because more staff will be sorting mail, Rupert said. It should also help shorten counter lines, he said, because with shorter hours, there will be more staff to man the counters at any given time.
