Personnel carrier on loan from Pentagon a favorite on Facebook

By Ramsey Scott

A picture labeling the Jeffco Sheriff Office’s armored personnel carrier a “tank” became a hot topic online last week.

A disc jockey named Willie B on 106.7 KBPI posted a picture of the armored personnel vehicle on his Facebook account April 9 with the caption, “… They gotta Tank!! I’m absolutely sure this is to protect us and serve us … right?”

The post was shared on Facebook more than 1,200 times and made its way onto the social media site Reddit.

The tank is actually a 1976 M113A1 armored personnel carrier the Sheriff’s Office has had since 2005, said spokesman Mark Techmeyer. The picture was from several years ago.

The vehicle has been on loan from the Department of Defense at no cost, Techmeyer said.

“It’s not offensive, it has no weapons, it’s a defensive piece of equipment. It’s used primarily when we have an active shooter situation,” Techmeyer said. “We’ve had this thing for nine years. It’s been at the fair and the Summerset Festival.”

The last time the vehicle was used was in 2009.
