A gunman was fatally shot by Jeffco sheriff's deputies on Saturday night outside the King Soopers at West Belleview Avenue and South Kipling Street.

The man with the gun was identified as Evan H. Bynum, 40, a resident of South Jeffco. No other injuries were reported among customers, employees or sheriff's officers.

Deputies responded at 9:15 p.m. after a caller reported that a man with a handgun was wandering around the store talking to himself.

Several deputies waited outside for the man to leave the store while one officer entered to monitor his movements. As the man exited, he was confronted by the waiting deputies. The suspect allegedly pulled the gun form his back pants pocket, and shots were exchanged between him and the deputies, the Sheriff's Office said.

The suspect was hit at least once, according to the Sheriff's Office. He was transported to St. Anthony Hospital and was later pronounced dead.

The store was closed overnight while deputies conducted their investigation but reopened Sunday morning.
