Ever have your car vandalized, and need a police report for the insurance company?
In the past, you had to head down to the nearest sheriff’s station, which for residents of unincorporated Jefferson County can mean a lengthy car ride.
But not anymore.
Simple crimes can now be reported online, one of several new features on the Jeffco sheriff's website. The sheriff's office is also featuring an updated sex-offender mapping tool and a crime-mapping feature that lets residents see what's happening near them. The website also has a page on the popular social networking site Facebook and an online photo gallery on Flickr, and posts messages on YouTube, a popular video sharing website.
The sheriff's office has had some functions online for a while, such as e-mail alerts on crimes and the ability for people to sign up for "Behind the Badge," a newsletter in which the sheriff discusses crime trends and other issues.
The updated online functions give residents the power to search for locations of crimes, file reports and locate sex offenders in their neighborhoods.
For instance, the updated sex-offender database allows for searching for registered sex offenders in unincorporated Jeffco by address, name or by every sex offender in the county. It's possible to narrow down the map to look at specific areas, like South Jeffco.
"We're using technology to meet our goals, whatever they may be," said Sheriff Ted Mink.
Mink added that the new online functions allow citizens to take care of routine needs without driving all over the county.
"It's important for us to stay with technology and where it's going," said Jacki Kelley, spokeswoman for the sheriff's office.
