A 13-year-old Ken Caryl Middle School student was injured Sept. 4 when she was hit by a car in front of the school.

Danielle K. Barker, 13, was walking across Ken Caryl Avenue in a designated crosswalk when she was hit by a 1997 black Cadillac Catera driven by Dustin Wert, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

Barker was taken by ambulance to Littleton Hospital, then by helicopter to Children's Hospital in Denver.

Wert, 24, has been charged with careless driving causing injury, a class 2 traffic misdemeanor, according to Trooper Gilbert Mares of the State Patrol. Wert also was charged with false reporting, a class 3 traffic misdemeanor.

Elizabeth Whitehead, spokesperson for the Children's Hospital, said Sept. 6 that Barker had been discharged from the hospital in good condition.
