Swinestone Cowboys of Littleton will join Flyboy BBQ of Bailey as the two teams representing Colorado in the 25th annual Jack Daniel’s World Championship Invitational Barbecue in Lynchburg, Tenn., on Oct. 26.

“As far as invitational competitions go, the ‘Jack’ might be the best,” said Steve Renfro of Flyboy BBQ.

Each year, approximately 90 teams are invited to the Jack Daniel’s event based on how they performed in competitions during the year. The U.S. is well represented, and teams from Australia, Belgium, Germany, South Africa, Switzerland and more round out the international invitees.

Swinestone Cowboys joins Flyboy BBQ as the two teams representing Colorado. Both had impressive finishes at the Conifer Mountain BBQ Challenge in August. Swinestone Cowboys finished second overall, and Flyboy fourth.

“The Jack is always exciting,” Renfro said. “I like the long drive, and it’s one of the most prestigious barbecue contests.”

This will be Renfro’s third time competing in “the Jack.” In 2011, Flyboy BBQ earned seventh in ribs and placed 28th overall. In 2012, Renfro’s brisket was awarded a fourth, and it placed seventh overall.

“It’s just been unbelievable,” said Renfro, who instructs pilots for United Airlines when not cooking award-winning barbecue. “I’ve been competing for only four years and have been in the Jack for three.”

Teams will compete in seven categories: ribs, pork shoulder, brisket, chicken, dessert, cook’s choice and best Jack Daniel’s sauce.

Renfro’s team for the Lynchburg trip will include parents Frank and Judy and good friend Jack Schmitt. Wife Marilyn and daughters Calista and Charlize will be cheering from home.

Renfro said he’s not changing a thing about his recipe or cooking.

“I’m going to keep doing what I’ve always done,” he said. “You’ve got to be precise, careful and avoid making mistakes. If I can avoid mistakes, I know I’ll have a good cook.

“This never gets old,” he said. “Each competition is special.”
