A Littleton police officer who died in a traffic accident while off duty was laid to rest on Friday.
Officer Kevin Denner, 42, died from injuries he suffered when his motorcycle collided with a car on May 6 in Aurora. He was remembered in a ceremony Friday at Mission Hills Church in Littleton.
“Kevin was not only a tremendous asset to the department, but he was a dedicated friend to many. He will be sorely missed,” said interim Police Chief Gene Enley.
Denner was riding on East Belleview Avenue in Aurora when a Toyota sedan driving the opposite way on Belleview made a turn in front of him onto De Gaulle Street, police said. Denner's Harley-Davidson struck the side of the car. According to the Aurora Police Department, Denner was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident but it was knocked off.
The driver of the car, 37-year-old Jemal Abdelkader Dawed, was taken into custody at the scene of the accident. He was later charged with suspicion of vehicular homicide, careless driving, driving while under the influence of alcohol and failure to yield the right of way.
Dawed is currently out of jail on a $50,000 bond.
Denner is survived by his wife, Kristen, and two children ages 8 and 9.
“Kevin dedicated his career to preventing these types of crimes," Kristen Denner said in a statement released by Littleton. "He was an amazing father and a devoted husband, and we will never forget him.”
