A perpetrator allegedly caught in the act of forcing his way into a gym locker has been arrested in two locker break-ins in the area.
Mel Peter Trujillo, 53, is accused of using a bolt cutter to break into a locker April 15 at The Ridge Rec Center, according to the Jeffco Sheriff’s Office. Trujillo has been charged with third-degree burglary and criminal mischief.
Ron Hopp, executive director of the Foothills Park and Recreation District, said employees noticed a man acting suspicious when he entered the center.
The man asked for a towel, which the center doesn’t provide, and then asked the location of the nearest bathroom, Hopp said. Employees were on alert after a locker break-in the previous Sunday.
“They caught him in the act with a bolt cutter cutting a padlock off a locker,” Hopp said. “The employee asked, 'What are you doing?' and he said, 'I forgot my combination.' When our employee said, 'That’s not your locker,' the man ran out of the building.”
Hopp said two employees followed the man into the parking lot and recorded the license-plate number of the truck he left in.
Trujillo was later stopped by a sheriff’s deputy. He is also a suspect in the April 13 locker break-in.
