A 31-year-old Aurora man died after his car plunged into Johnston Reservoir at Clement Park early Monday.

David Helding died from drowning according to the Jeffco Coroner's Office. He was pronounced dead after being transported to Littleton Hospital.

Witnesses said Helding was driving a 2007 Pontiac coup around the walking path that encircles the lake about 4:20 a.m. After at least one lap, the car veered off the path near the former Hops Restaurant and into the water, said Colorado State Trooper Nate Reid.

“The bike path turns to the left near the restaurant. He failed to negotiate the curve and lost control and went into the water and it rolled over onto its top,” Reid said. “The water was shallow enough for the vehicle to be sticking out of the water.”

There were no other cars or passengers involved in the accident.

The State Patrol had a portion of the walking path around the reservoir closed Monday while it conducted an investigation.

It was reported originally that Helding was 32-years-old.
