The man killed when his motorcycle collided with an SUV at South Simms Street and West Bowles Avenue on April 29 was fleeing from police, according to the Colorado State Patrol.
A state trooper tried to pull the man over for speeding on U.S. 285 near Kipling, and he exited the highway onto southbound Simms, according to a statement. The trooper lost sight of the motorcycle but caught up to it near South Simms Street and West Belleview Avenue, when he turned on his emergency lights. The driver of the motorcycle did not respond, so the trooper turned on his siren, and the motorcyclist accelerated rapidly.
The motorcyclist then ran the red light on southbound Simms at West Bowles Avenue and ran into a white Chevy Suburban attempting to turn left from West Bowles Avenue to northbound Simms.
The motorcycle driver died at the scene, but there were no injuries to anyone in the Chevy Suburban.
The motorcycle driver has not been identified, pending notification of family.
The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office had dispatched a few deputies to close some roads in the area, according to Jacki Kelley, spokeswoman for the sheriff.
The state patrol said the license plate on the motorcycle did not match the registration.
