PARKER - Brandon Mikulka homered and Tanner Grabinowski drove in two runs as eighth-seeded Ponderosa held off Chatfield, 4-2, on May 16 in the 5A District 2 tournament.

The Mustangs (16-5) broke open a 2-all tie with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. That would be all that pitcher David Johnson would need to finish off a complete-game six-hitter. He walked two and struck out eight.

Chatfield (10-10) took an early 2-0 lead with RBIs from Addison Ives and Zach Smith, but the Chargers couldn’t hold on to that lead.

Ives scattered seven hits over six innings, striking out three and walking three others in the loss.

Kyle Barnhart had two hits for the Chargers, including a triple. He also scored one of Chatfield’s two runs. Connor Blevins scored the other.

Ponderosa later advanced to the eight-team double-elimination state tournament with an 11-3 win over Highlands Ranch. The state tournament begins May 21 and continues through the finals on May 29 at All City Field in Denver.
