The Jeffco Sheriff’s Office suspects a string of vehicle break-ins at fitness centers across the county are related.
Over the last two months, more than 38 cars have been broken into while parked at fitness centers. According to the Sheriff’s Office, almost all the vehicles had their windows broken, and purses were stolen from inside.
In most cases, the Sheriff’s Office said, the suspected thieves took the victim’s identification to a local bank and used the drive-through lanes to withdraw money from the victim’s account.
The two most recent break-ins occurred Feb. 6 at Bally Total Fitness on West Bowles Avenue west of Wadsworth Boulevard. The two victims arrived about 3:15 p.m., and within 30 minutes both vehicles had their windows smashed, and purses were stolen.
The Sheriff’s Office said security footage from Bally’s parking lot showed two men parked in a car watching gym members enter and leave the building. After a period of time, the men were seen on the video breaking into the two cars.
The pair were seen then leaving the parking lot in a car the Sheriff’s Office believed was a dark-colored Dodge Journey.
The Sheriff’s Office asked anyone with information on the robberies to call its tip line at 303-271-5612.
