The Rebels’ girls basketball team was happy to get one more home game Feb. 28. Call it a curtain call for the seniors and one more chance for the team to continue to improve.

The No. 5 Rebels got all of that as they pounded 12th-seeded Fruita Monument to kick off the first round of the Class 5A state tournament.

It was fun, it was exciting and it was over before halftime as Columbine opened up a 21-point lead before the break while holding the Wildcats (7-15) to just 14 points.

“It was fine,” Columbine junior Alyssa Maccan said with a carefree smile. “It was a battle.”

Maccan hit her first eight shots, three of which were 3-pointers, to finish with 12 points, and Hayes was busy inside scoring 19 points, grabbing seven rebounds and blocking three shots.

Apergis and senior Breanna Williams scored nine points apiece as the Rebels committed just 14 turnovers for the game. Williams added eight rebounds and blocked two shots.

“We’re 10-2 over our last 12 and playing some pretty good basketball,” Rebels coach Jim Bartok said. “Maccan is shooting the ball well, Breanna is taking the ball hard to the basket and we have Randee and Demitra.

“I thought we maybe had a little bit of a letdown at the start of the second half. I like the way the bench kids came in. Aimee Thomas, Olivia Leyshock came in and did a very good job getting the ball inside.”

Columbine’s sluggish start to the second half was nipped by a timeout, which saw the Rebels reemerge with a purpose and extend their lead to 28 points (48-21) on Thomas’ layup seconds before the end of the quarter.

The Rebels never relaxed and took their big lead with five minutes remaining when Hayes scored to make it 54-21.

Senior Molly Ramirez even got on the court in the final minute for her final game at home despite nursing a sore ankle.

Columbine limited Fruita Monument’s starters to just 22 points.

“We need to run our offenses better and we’re really trying to hit our shots really well,” Maccan said. “When we start to get emotion we start to do really well.”
