Restaurants accepting donations for hurricane victims

A set of restaurants in Clear Creek County and South Jeffco are accepting donations of household cleaning items and other supplies to help victims of the recent hurricanes.

Idaho Springs’ MTN Prime and both LUCHA Cantina locations in Georgetown and South Jeffco are working with the Cajun Navy Relief, a non-profit based in Louisiana that helps hurricane and flood victims.

The restaurants said the Cajun Navy Relief is focusing on demolishing or gutting damaged homes. The three locations are accepting donations of mops, box bands, mold killer, bleach, garbage bags, sledgehammers, pry bars, generators and similar supplies.

Donations are accepted during normal business hours at MTN Prime, 1600 Miner St. in Idaho Springs; at the LUCHA Cantina at 606 Sixth St. in Georgetown; and at the location at 8026 W. Bowles Ave. in South Jeffco.

MTN Prime and both LUCHA locations will be accepting donations for at least four weeks.

Steven Steger, MTN Prime’s general manager, said his marketing manager’s dad has been volunteering with the Cajun Navy since Hurricane Harvey struck southern Texas and Louisiana. When he came back to Colorado recently, MTN Prime asked how it could help and what kind of supplies the victims needed.

The restaurants are fairly well known in their respective communities, he said, and have plenty of storage space available to accept donations before dispersing them to the Cajun Navy.

“The Cajun Navy told us that, as long as these hurricanes and wildfires keep happening, they will keep accepting donations,” Steger said.

People have already brought in what Steger described as a “plethora of donations,” including cases of water and school supplies. Steger said he was overwhelmed by the generous response in such a short amount of time.

“Most people are so excited to have a spot locally to take things,” he said of responses he’s had from donors. “And they are ecstatic to help.”
