Sinkhole repairs on Simms might take awhile

County first must replace culvert

By Ramsey Scott

Repair work on a massive sinkhole will close South Simms Street between West Cooper Avenue and South Ward Street for the foreseeable future.

Jeffco shut down Simms last week to begin repairing a culvert that collapsed beneath the street on June 25. The collapsed culvert created a 20-foot-wide sinkhole about 400 square feet in total size.

Before repair work can begin on the street, a contractor hired by the county must first replace the culvert with a new 48-inch-wide steel culvert. Repair work was on hold until the contractor and the county could secure the work permits.

Jeffco announced that culvert work should last about two weeks but could be delayed by weather or an unforeseen complication. The county didn’t give an estimated date for the sinkhole repairs to be completed.
