Jeffco sheriff’s deputies put out a small grass fire in the Ken-Caryl area Monday afternoon before it had a chance to spread.

The fire, in the 9900 block of Whistling Elk Drive south of Deer Creek Road, started about 4:15 p.m. after a male teenager was playing with fireworks.

Deputies were able to contain the fire to a quarter acre using rakes, shovels and fire extinguishers borrowed from neighboring houses, said sheriff's spokesman Mark Techmeyer.

By the time firefighters arrived, the blaze was contained and was only smoldering, Techmeyer said.

He said the fire occurred on private property in the subdivision, and the Sheriff’s Office is still considering if any charges will be filed against the teen.
