Columbine’s Hertz honored by Nuggets for excellence in training
Columbine High athletic trainer Matt Hertz was one of two recipients of the 2013 Excellence in Athletic Training awards by the Denver Nuggets last month.
They were recognized by Nuggets athletic trainer Jim Gillen prior to the team’s home game March 23 against the Sacramento Kings.
Lisa Smith of Denver East High School was also honored. Hertz and Smith each received $2,000 for their respective athletic training programs along with an automated external defibrillator.

Weiman pitches Columbine to 6-1 win over Crescent Valley
— Blake Weiman struck out 11 as Columbine concluded a four-game road trip in Arizona with a 6-1 win over Crescent Valley on March 28.
The Rebels (4-4) went 3-1 on the trip.
Austin Anderson went 2-for-3 with a triple and drove in three runs. Logan Smith also had two hits and scored twice.

Dakota Ridge drops finale in 3-1 road trip to Arizona
— The Bend (Ore.) High Lava Bears scored a 1-0 win over Dakota Ridge on March 28, snapping the Eagles’ three-game winning streak at the spring break Coach Bob Invitational tournament.
Dakota Ridge (4-2) won its first three games in the tournament over Canby (Ore.) 18-3, Valley Vista (Surprise, Ariz.) 10-2 and Crescent Valley (Corvallis, Ore.) 4-2.
Dakota Ridge returns home to face Mountain Vista on April 3 at Dakota Ridge High. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.

Chargers go winless on spring trip to Arizona
— Libertyville (Ill.) High scored an 8-7 win over Chatfield on March 28, sending the Chargers to a six-game losing streak in its spring break road trip.
Chatfield (2-6) lost four games by one run on the trip.
The Chargers play at Castle View on April 3.

Littleton drops sixth straight, falls 5-3 to Copper Canyon
— Copper Canyon (Scottsdale, Ariz.) High scored four runs in the second inning and held on for a 5-3 win over Littleton on March 29.
The loss was Littleton’s sixth straight and dropped the Lions to 1-6 on the season.
Littleton lost despite getting nine hits, including a 3-for-4 performance by senior Kevin Wake. Freshman Dylan Nickless had two hits, while Ryan Ireland drove in two runs.

Columbine drops first three games on East Coast road trip
— Columbine completed a three-game road trip on the East Coast with a 10-6 loss to Fordham Prep on March 30.
The Rebels went 0-3 on the trip, dropping their record to 4-3 on the season.
Columbine dropped its spring break opener 8-5 to Yorktown, N.Y., and the fell 13-12 to John Jay High School of Cross River, N.Y., on March 28.

East Chapel Hill sends Eagles to second straight loss in Carolinas
— Ryan Dotson scored five goals and five other players scored two goals each as East Chapel Hill scored a 15-3 victory over visiting Dakota Ridge on March 28.
The loss concluded an 0-2 road trip to the Carolinas for the Eagles, who also lost 11-10 to Cedar Ridge two days earlier.
Dakota Ridge is 2-4 this season.
