Chatfield 132-pounder Jake Thayer will represent the Chargers at the 5A state tournament after placing second at the Region 1 tournament Feb. 16 at Smoky Hill High School in Aurora.
Thayer won a trio of matches to reach the finals, including an ultimate tiebreaker victory over Eaglecrest’s Jake Dugan in the semifinals. In the championship bout, Thayer was upended by a 3-0 decision by Pomona’s Raymond Robledo.
A pair of other Chargers — Sam Hebert at 160 pounds and Wilson George at 195 — placed fifth.
Chatfield scored 55.5 points to place 12th in the 16-team field. Pomona won with 243 points. Ponderosa was second with 214.5
Littleton’s best bet at the 5A Region 2 tournament at Doherty High School in Colorado Springs was 113-pounder Poe Di.
The Lions freshman reached the semifinals before falling to Mountain Range’s Timmy Romero by a 6-0 decision. Di then worked his way back through the fifth-place match to earn a wrestleback only to have his state hopes dashed in sudden death by Doherty’s Jonathan Garcia.
