  • The gym goes Zen: FitClub Columbine opens state-of-the-art facility in Littleton

    The first thing visitors will notice when they walk into Koko FitClub Columbine is the absence of pumping, loud music and the lack of mirrors. Instead, visitors are greeting with quiet pop music, serene colors and gentle lighting.

    “It’s the world’s first and only automated personal training studio,” Koko FitClub owner Alex Keller said. “It’s a fusion of technology and exercise and makes exercise accessible for people who have trouble, for different reasons, maintaining an exercise program.”

  • Low-income residents get help making homes livable

    South Metro Housing Options is ramping up its efforts to reach landlords through its new rental rehab program while it continues its regular housing rehab program.

    Through a partnership with FirstBank, the housing rehab program offers 10-year, low-interest loans to low-income residents of Arapahoe County for rehabilitating their homes. The rental rehab program offers similarly low rates to landlords who have low-income families as tenants.

  • Walmart may open Neighborhood Market in vacant Ultimate Electronics building

    Walmart appears to be planning to open a second Neighborhood Market store in the South Jeffco area in the long-vacant Ultimate Electronics building at 8196 W. Bowles Ave.

    Last summer, Walmart opened a Neighborhood Market in the vacant Alberstons in the shopping center at the northeast corner of Bowles and South Lowell Street.

    The Neighborhood Market includes a pharmacy, bakery, deli, produce and personal products but no clothing or hard goods. 

  • Hearing on dealership ends in uproar

    A Planning Commission hearing on the proposed rezoning near Chatfield Bluffs ended abruptly Oct. 24 after the applicants walked away at the last minute, leaving the audience and the panel of seven commissioners somewhat stunned and wondering how to proceed.

    About 75 people had turned out to oppose a plan to put a car dealership on vacant property in the Jefferson Corporate Center off C-470 and Kipling Parkway.

  • Fitness fanatics take part in Pumpkin Boot Camp

    If you heard goblins and ghouls a-groanin’ on Saturday, perhaps you attended the Pumpkin Boot Camp Festival at Arapahoe Community College.

    Now in its sixth year, the event, presented by Camp MissFits and the ACC Foundation, is a fund-raiser for ACC’s fitness center.

    Priscilla Friedlander, the boot camp director who’s also connected with Camp MissFits, said the event is key for maintaining the fitness center.

    The Alamo Draft House is building an 800-seat theater facility in the Aspen Grove shopping center that the company hopes will change the way you see movies. For those who may be yawning at the notion of yet another movie theater in the area, read on.

    The company, which opened in 1997 in Austin, Texas, bills itself as something more than the average cineplex.

  • Natural Grocers eyes new location in South Jeffco

    Natural Grocers by Vitamin Cottage plans to open a 15,000-square-foot "full-service organic grocery" at South Kipling Parkway and West Coal Mine Avenue, north of the Chase Bank on Kipling. The site had previously been considered for a multi-story assisted-living center.

    The proposed store will replace an existing outlet in the shopping center on the northeast corner of South Simms Street and West Ken Caryl Avenue.

  • Jake’s can slake two thirsts

    It began as a joke between a mother and daughter.

    Vanessa Menke, the daughter, and her mom, Jayne Barth, are the proud operators of Jake’s Brew Bar and Cafe in downtown Littleton.

    Just around the corner stands their first baby, Kate’s Wine Bar, at 5671 S. Nevada St.

    “Kate’s has been open for four years, and we were joking one day that it’d be great to have two spots, Kate’s on one side, Jake’s on the other,” Menke says.

  • Senior center owner seeks second building on adjacent lot

    The owners of the Gardens at Columbine, an assisted-living center, have purchased an adjacent lot and want to demolish the existing home and build a senior care facility for about 22 residents.

    The Gardens’ main building at the southwest corner of Platte Canyon Road and West Ken Caryl Avenue is in Arapahoe County, while the proposed building would be in Jefferson County.

  • Farmers market offers eclectic fare

    The weekly farmers market brings a splash of life and color each Wednesday to the parking lot at the Aspen Grove Lifestyle Center.

    The annual event kicked off summer 2012 on June 13, with some 35 vendors plying an eclectic collection of loosely defined local goods, including coffee beans, bread, Alaskan salmon, rock art, dog leashes and fabric bags. Stands offered Colorado-grown fresh cherries, apricots and other produce. The farmers market, which continues through October, is open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
