Evergreen Newspapers recently won 61 awards — 47 from the Colorado Press Association, including sweepstakes honors for photography and design for the Canyon Courier and Clear Creek Courant, and 14 more from the Society of Professional Journalists’ Top of the Rockies contest.

The Colorado Press Association awards banquet was held April 14 at The Antlers Hotel in Colorado Springs. The Top of the Rockies awards ceremony was Friday night at the Denver Press Club.

Nearly two years after Jeffco voters rejected a $535 million bond issue and $33 million property-tax increase campaigned for by Jeffco Public Schools, the school district is again considering a multi-million dollar bond issue — this time to the tune of $647 million over six years.

Publicly discussed for the first time during the April 5 school board meeting, the district positioned the possibility of a bond issue as the answer to what it says are widespread maintenance, programming and safety issues at every Jeffco school, including charters.

Students at Westridge Elementary School received a lesson in entrepreneurship and economics during the annual toy and trade show held on April 16.

The show is a showcase of a six-week unit that provides students an understanding of economic concepts through a fun and engaging hands-on simulation. For the project, students had to design their own companies, create interesting toy products, do market research, write a business proposal, create info graphics and commercials, host board meetings, make a prototype and participate in a school-wide trade show.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office has arrested one suspect in connection with an October crime spree that included a smash-and-grab burglary at J.C. Penney Co. in Southwest Plaza.

Lance David Segura, 19, was arrested April 18 for his involvement in a multi-jurisdictional crime spree overnight on Oct. 25 and 26, according to the sheriff’s office.
