  • Turnover taxing Jeffco Human Services Department

    Jeffco’s Department of Human Services is struggling with a high employee turnover rate, as more and more employees leave for similar jobs in neighboring counties that pay more.

    According to a report presented to the county commissioners, between 2010 and 2012, Human Services had a turnover rate for full-time employees of just under 30 percent, more than double the generally accepted 14 percent rate for government agencies.

    For divisions like Justice Services and Fraud, the turnover rate was more than 37 percent.  

  • Plans to tighten smoking regulations in unincorporated Jeffco worry commissioners

    A coalition of anti-smoking groups wants to tighten smoking restrictions in Jefferson County, but the county commissioners got a little hot under the collar over infringing on the rights of business owners.

    Jeffco’s Public Health Department has teamed with Healthy Unincorporated Jefferson County, a tobacco prevention coalition, to push for several changes to Jeffco’s smoking regulations and restrictions.

  • Bridge lighting celebrates completion of west corridor light-rail line

    RTD celebrated the final stage of construction on its new west corridor light-rail line, which runs from downtown Denver to the Jeffco government center in Golden, with the lighting of the Sixth Avenue Bridge on Jan. 23.  

    Several hundred people gathered at Lakewood Fordland and along the West Sixth Avenue frontage road near the bridge to watch the lighting ceremony. More than a few photographers set up tripods along the road to capture the first watts to emanate from the bridge’s lights.

    Whole Foods has issued a recall for 4-ounce packages of Whole Catch Wild Alaskan Sockeye Salmon, cold-smoked and sliced, due to possible listeria contamination.

  • Morrison man arrested amid seizure of explosives

    Federal agents arrested a Morrison man last Thursday after an undercover operation revealed he allegedly was making explosives and planned to sell them for cash or cocaine.

    Richard Lawrence Sandberg, 35, was charged with one count of possession of a firearm after bomb squads from the ATF, Jeffco Sheriff’s Office and Denver police removed several improvised explosive devices from his home at 4648 S. Swadley Way.

    Lawrence, who said he is a former Marine special forces soldier, could face up to 10 years in federal prison if convicted.

  • New details released on suspect in South Jeffco sexual assault

    The Jeffco Sheriff's Office has released more details about a suspect in a sexual assault in January. 

    The assault occurred about 8 a.m. Jan. 25 while a woman was walking along a bike path near C-470 and South Wadsworth Boulevard.

    The woman was attacked from behind as she entered a tunnel that passes under C-470.

  • Commissioners approve changes to parking regulations

    The county commissioners have unanimously approved several changes to parking regulations, despite some homeowners’ fears that their neighborhoods will become parking lots for recreational vehicles.

    RVs can now be parked on a residential street in unincorporated Jefferson County for 28 days. Previously, an RV could be left in the same general spot for 14 days.

    The change came after a resident’s suggestion as the commissioners were studying revisions to the parking rules.
