  • School board member Noonan arrested on outstanding warrant for traffic ticket

    Jeffco school board member Paula Noonan was arrested during a traffic stop Jan. 8 when Denver police officers became aware of an outstanding warrant from a 2011 traffic ticket.

    Noonan wrote in a letter to the editor of the Courier that in 2011 she was ticketed for not having proof of insurance when she was pulled over. Noonan was given a court date, which she said she missed.

    Noonan apologized publicly at the school board’s meeting Thursday evening.

  • DA warns of sexual comments posted on photo-sharing site

    The Jeffco district attorney’s office is warning parents and children to be cautious when using social media sites like Instagram.

    The DA’s Child Sex Offender Internet Investigations Unit has received complaints from parents and children about strangers leaving sexually explicit comments directed at children on the site.

    Sites like Instagram allow users to alter and share pictures they’ve taken. Users can see other people’s photos and leave comments.

  • Morrison synagogue vandalized again

    A synagogue in Morrison has been the site of several acts of vandalism over the past year, the most recent involving Nazi symbols.

    On Jan. 4 two backward swastikas were found painted on both sides of the sign for the B'Nai Chaim Temple at 4716 S. Coors St. It was not the first act of vandalism at the Reform Jewish Congregation’s temple that involved a swastika, according to the Jeffco Sheriff’s Office.

  • Jeffco swears in newly elected officials

    Jeffco started the new year with a little pomp and circumstance — and a lot of proud family members — when the county swore in its newly elected governmental officials on Jan. 8.

    The hearing room in the Jeffco government center was packed with relatives of the new officials waiting to see their loved ones take the oath of office, some for the first time. During the swearing in of District Attorney Peter Weir, his daughter stood by him, right hand raised, reciting the oath with her father.

  • As Tighe takes office, funding cuts to social-services nonprofits come up again

    The Jefferson County commissioners got down to business for 2013 with a new look but still talking about old business, from board assignments to recent county funding cuts to three nonprofits.

    Democratic Commissioner Casey Tighe, who defeated Republican incumbent John Odom in November’s election, was sworn into office right before the Jan. 8 meeting along with Commissioner Faye Griffin, who was unopposed in her bid for re-election.

    The meeting marked the first time since Nov. 15 that all three elected officials were present and voting.

  • Influenza hitting county residents hard

    Jefferson County public health officials are urging residents to get immunized against influenza.

    Mark Johnson, executive director of Jeffco Public Health, said the seasonal illness is hitting the county hard.

    “We are seeing this season’s flu hit a bit earlier, and we’re seeing it hit a bit harder than we usually see it,” said Johnson.

    He said an 8-month-old from Jefferson County died from the flu.

    The Colorado General Assembly has embarked on its 2013 session, a four-month whirlwind that will address thorny issues which include education funding, civil unions and gun control.
