    SOUTH JEFFCO — In a major setback to golf course etiquette, a bogeyman punched holes in a putting green one dark night recently at the Meadows Golf Course, spelling out a profane word and leaving course personnel tee-d off. The vandal ended his spree in the verdant setting by sculpting a male appendage in a sand trap.

  • Second Paschall case ends in mistrial

    A Jeffco jury deadlocked for the second time in six months on whether former Jeffco treasurer Mark Paschall tried to solicit a kickback from a political appointee in the twilight of his term.

    Jurors could not reach a verdict on the charge of compensation for past official behavior. In Paschall’s first trial in February, the jury found him not guilty of attempted theft but also deadlocked on the compensation charged.

  • Capturing courage: Couple's documentary headed to Hollywood film festival

    South Jeffco residents Cortni and Jeff Mullin are getting ready to send their baby off to California.

    At least, that’s the way it feels.

    The married couple worked as producers of the short documentary “Teresa,” which will be part of the Feel Good Film Festival Aug. 22-24 in Hollywood.

    For the Mullinses, having their film shown at the festival is a pleasant surprise after two years of pouring blood, sweat and tears into the project.

  • Deja vu: Second Paschall trial under way

    It was dj vu all over again in Jefferson County Courtroom 5D.

    Sixty-four new potential jurors filed into the room for former Jeffco treasurer Mark Paschall's second kickback trial, but all else was a replay of the February day when Paschall’s first trial began. Paschall was there with defense attorney David Lane, and his family was there to support him. Deputy District Attorneys Tom Jackson and Sean Clifford were there again, hoping this time they can convict Paschall of a second charge against him — compensation for past official behavior.

  • Older Zamora found guilty of first-degree murder

    The older of two brothers on trial in the April 2007 murder of 20-year-old Dylan Newman was convicted July 28 of first-degree felony murder and faces life in prison, while his younger brother was found guilty of a lone charge of reckless manslaughter.

    Adam Zamora, 22, also was convicted of reckless manslaughter, aggravated robbery, and possession of marijuana with intent to sell.

    His younger brother, Aaron, 20, was found innocent of three other counts and was granted a bond hearing. Aaron faces two to six years in prison on the reckless manslaughter charge.

  • Reverse-911 glitch sent wrong people packing during Oxyoke Fire

    When Buffalo Creek resident Vicki Porter got a reverse-911 call July 20 during the Oxyoke Fire notifying her household of a mandatory evacuation, she and her family acted immediately, filling boxes and preparing to flee.

    But the family’s panic was short-lived — and unnecessary. Another call came a half-hour later saying that the first was in error: Porter’s home was one of 1,350 households that were wrongly contacted because of a glitch in the notification system.

  • Jeffco enacts fire restrictions

    The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office has announced temporary fire restrictions for all unincorporated areas of the county.

    The restrictions also include a portion of the Arapaho-Roosevelt National Forest off Brook Forest Road and will be in effect until further notice.

    While the restrictions are in effect, the following activities are prohibited:

    • Building, maintaining, attending or using any fire or campfire except within a permanently constructed fire grate in a developed park, campground or picnic area.

  • Suspect in custody in robbery at credit union

    A suspect in the armed robbery at the Bellco Credit Union at South Kipling Street and West Belleview Avenue on Wednesday morning surrendered to authorities late in the afternoon.

  • Oxyoke Fire 50 percent contained

    The Oxyoke Fire 5 miles north of Deckers was 50 percent contained early July 22 thanks to the efforts of 225 firefighters over two days.

    More than a dozen homes had been evacuated in the Oxyoke area since the fire was reported Sunday afternoon. The blaze had burned more than 145 acres along County Road 67 and the South Platte River in Jefferson County.

    The North Fork and Platte Canyon fire districts were among the departments that responded.

    Firefighters were expected to have the blaze 100 percent contained by the end of the day July 22.

  • Trial scheduled in theft from South Jeffco Sports Association

    South Jeffco resident Carrie Smith pleaded not guilty July 21 in the theft of more than $100,000 from the South Jeffco Sports Association.

    Jefferson County District Judge Dennis Hall scheduled a motions hearing for Nov. 6 and a trial date of Dec. 2, but Smith's attorney doesn't think it will get that far.
