  • Jeffco trying to get its piece of federal earmark pie

    Jefferson County wants $7.6 million in federal funds earmarked for various county projects in fiscal 2009.

    The money is for projects ranging from completing work on the air-traffic control tower at the Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport to efforts to prevent the exploitation of senior citizens.

  • Voting equipment good to go, but critics still skeptical

    It’s been an up-and-down year for election equipment in Jeffco.

    In December 2007, Jeffco’s electronic voting machines were decertified, despite county officials’ contention that there was nothing wrong with them, and that it would cost too much to replace the equipment so close to a major election. Jeffco appealed the decision to the secretary of state’s office in January, and it wasn’t until March that the equipment was “conditionally” certified.

  • Gov. Ritter issues Columbine anniversary statement

    Gov. Bill Ritter issued the following statement April 19 commemorating the ninth anniversary of the tragedy that occurred at Columbine High School on April 20, 1999:

    “It is with great sorrow and a heavy heart that we pause this weekend to remember what happened at Columbine High School nine years ago. My thoughts, sympathies and prayers will forever be with the families, victims, students, teachers and others who lost so much that terrible day.

  • Littleton votes to increase sewer rates outside city

    The Littleton City Council voted by a narrow margin to raise fees 20 percent, or $30 a year, for sewer treatment plant users outside the city and zero percent for ones inside the city limits.

    The decision will affect homeowners in areas of unincorporated South Jeffco despite the fact that they have no representation on the Littleton council.

    The council also voted to raise tap fees for builders inside the city from $2,500 to $5,000 and outside the city from $2,828 to $5,656, except for projects that have site plans approved by Oct. 15.

  • JCSO announces DUI checkpoints

    The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office will be doing another mobile DUI checkpoint starting at about 7 p.m. April 12. The checkpoint will be moving from one location to another every few hours. The locations will be:

    • 9100 block of West Coal Mine Avenue

    • 13500 block of West 44th Avenue

    • 5400 block of Highway 93

  • Six running for three Foothills board seats

    Residents of the Foothills Park and Recreation District will have a lot to think about before marking the ballots that will be sent to voters in mid-April.

    In addition to voting “yes” or “no” on whether to increase the property tax by 3 mills, they are being asked to choose three new members of the board of directors.

  • County postpones decision on Rock expansion

    Authorities postponed a decision on the proposed rezoning and addition to The Rock of Southwest Baptist Church until April 15 to allow more time for the public hearing.

    About 100 people, mostly from the Westridge and Reflections neighborhoods in South Jefferson County, jammed the hearing room to appeal to the county commissioners at 9 a.m. April 8.

    Some 17 attendees testified against the proposed church expansion at 10393 W. Alamo Place before discussion was cut off at 11:30 for scheduling reasons.

  • CoHope votes no on Foothills tax increase

    A coalition of South Jeffco homeowner groups voted not to support the 3-mill property tax increase being sought by the Foothills Park and Recreation District in May.

    CoHope, or Council of Homeowner Organizations for a Planned Environment, represents 32 homeowner associations and meets monthly at The Peak Rec Center to discuss community concerns.

  • County will review amphitheater changes

    The community will have a chance to weigh in on plans by the Denver Botanic Gardens at Chatfield to upgrade its amphitheater after the organization submitted a pre-application to the Jeffco planning office on April 8.

    The move comes after confusion about whether the Gardens needed to submit its plan to the county at all, considering it is on federal land.
