  • Kopp, Witwer push creation of committee to study wildfire mitigation

    Two Jeffco legislators are one step closer to creating a committee to study ways to deal with wildfires, especially in areas where homes and forests collide.

    These areas — referred to in firefighting circles as the “wildland-urban interface” — contain increasing numbers of homes and subdivisions, making it difficult for firefighters to effectively fight wildfires and protect homes and lives, according to Senate Joint Resolution 25. The resolution would create an interim committee that would meet this summer and make recommendations by Nov. 1.

    SOUTH JEFFCO — Not smart: Using a friend’s ID, then telling a deputy that you did not tell him your real name because you didn’t want to be accused of impersonating that friend. However ludicrous, that’s the excuse one woman used last week when arrested on an outstanding warrant. She was a passenger in a car that had been pulled over, and when asked to present an ID, she handed over a state ID card that belonged to a friend. Unfortunately for her, that friend had a warrant for her arrest, so the woman was taken to the Jefferson County Jail.

    The man killed when his motorcycle collided with an SUV at South Simms Street and West Bowles Avenue on April 29 was fleeing from police, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

  • Mill levy spurs hot debate in Ken-Caryl

    About 100 people jammed the meeting room at the Ken-Caryl Ranch House on Wednesday, April 23, for a sometimes-emotional debate over the proposed property-tax increase in the Ken-Caryl Ranch Metro District.

    The district is asking voters for the second time in six months to approve a 2.5-mill increase from the current 12.709 mills. The mill increase was defeated by a 54 percent no vote in the November election. A 2.5-mill increase would cost the owner of a house valued at $500,000 an extra $100 a year.

  • Suspect in theft from sports group waives hearing

    The South Jeffco woman charged with three felonies in the theft of more than $100,000 from the South Jeffco Sports Association waived her right to a preliminary hearing April 22.

    Carrie Smith will head straight to arraignment at 8 a.m. June 9 in district court, according to Tom Bennett, special projects director with the Jeffco DA’s office.

    Smith, 44, has been charged with theft of more than $20,000 and two counts of forgery by check.

    Charles Morphew, Smith’s attorney, did not respond to multiple calls seeking comment.

  • Trio arrested in six-state theft ring

    A theft ring targeting Target stores in several states reportedly was disrupted Tuesday after an arrest at the Target on West Bowles Avenue.

    Deputies responded to a theft report at the store April 22, according to the Jeffco sheriff’s office. Store security took one male into custody and was seeking two additional suspects who left the store. Deputies found the other two suspects a short time later.

    The suspects were identified as Amy M. May, 25, Jordon A. Debow 20, and Corey K. Cornwell, 23.

  • A message of hope and healing

    On a blustery Sunday in Clement Park, as people nearby played softball and soccer and flew kites, a small group gathered in the park’s northeast corner to remember what happened at Columbine High School on the same day nine years before.

    About 10 people were on hand as Nancy Dzurilla of New Life Church in Colorado Springs read Bible passages and shared thoughts and prayers for the victims of the Columbine shootings, their families and the victims of last year’s Virginia Tech shootings. The first anniversary of the Virginia Tech tragedy was marked last week.

  • Church gets preliminary OK from county to build youth center

    The Rock of Southwest Baptist Church came closer Tuesday morning to realizing its plan to add a two-story teen center building after a crucial vote of the Jefferson County commissioners.

    After two lengthy public hearings, two of three members of the board voted to endorse a version of the March 26 planning commission decision approving an expansion from 26,000 square feet to about 48,000 square feet of floor area. The church argued that it had the legal right to build up to 63,000 square feet.
