  • The Rock gets 60-day delay to modify expansion plan

    A decision on a rezoning request for The Rock of Southwest Baptist Church — a process that began in late 2006 — will have to wait even longer.

    The Jefferson County Planning Commission gave the church an opportunity to adjust its official development plan to account for community concerns by granting a 60-day continuance Jan. 23. The Rock will return March 26 with a submittal that addresses sight corridors, the building envelope and other issues that may stand in the way of its proposed expansion.

  • Foothills district undergoing re-branding effort

    Suddenly the entrance signs at Clement Park are purple and teal, and The Edge Ice Arena’s east wall has been adorned with 30-inch lettering.

    The signage is all part of a re-branding effort at some of Foothills Park and Recreation District’s more notable parks and facilities. It’s a project designed to increase the district’s visibility and help the public find their way to district facilities.

    Editor's note: After print publication deadlines, the Jeffco sheriff decided to reopen his office's investigation into the theft from the South Jeffco Sports Association. That decision came after a Jan. 28 meeting with representatives of the association and the Jeffco DA's office.

  • That was no lady — it wasn't even my friend's wife

    SOUTH JEFFCO — Some fat-fingered dialing called up trouble for a local man who tried to phone his friend's wife and contacted another person by mistake. A woman called the sheriff's office, saying that a random guy kept calling her and pretending to be her son. He apparently called four times and sent her a text message that said, "What's up." During the first call, the man asked if she was going to be home that night. The woman said yes, but that she had to go to be in bed early to get up for work the next morning.

  • Cleanup from broken water mains continues

    Residential landscaping damaged by a Jan. 3 malfunction at the Platte Canyon Water and Sanitation District will have to wait until spring to be repaired.

    A high-pressure surge in fresh water delivered from Denver Water caused six mains to fail several weeks ago. The surge caused a 24-hour shutdown as Platte Canyon and Denver Water worked to resolve the issue. The affected neighborhoods were in the Leawood Subdivision, the Normandy Estates Subdivision and the Columbine Knolls Subdivision.

  • Vandals bashing vehicles parked on area streets

    Almost two dozen cars have been damaged in a rash of vandalism in South Jeffco, according to the sheriff's office, and residents are being encouraged to park their cars in driveways or garages whenever possible.

    Seven cars were vandalized late on Jan. 20 and early on Jan. 21 in the Columbine Hills area, and 14 cars were damaged during the same time period the night of Jan. 22 into the early hours of Jan. 23 in the Friendly Hills area, according to Jim Shires, sheriff’s spokesman.

  • Fat City soon to get new owners

    An apparent sale will see entertainment center Fat City changing hands Feb. 8 to a new, local owner.

    Formerly known as Funplex, Fat City was purchased and subsequently renovated by San Diego-based Greenback Entertainment Inc. in 2000. The 140,000-square-foot facility offers bowling, a roller-skating rink, arcade games, dining and other entertainment options.

  • Former Jeffco sheriff arrested on stalking charges

    Former Jefferson County sheriff Russ Cook was arrested in South Jeffco on Jan. 21, accused of stalking a woman in El Paso County.

    Jeffco deputies arrested Cook, 58, in his home without incident, according to sheriff’s spokeswoman Jacki Kelley. Kelley said her office asked Arapahoe County for assistance in holding Cook on the no-bond warrant to avoid conflicts of interest in the Jeffco jail.

    Arapahoe County Sheriff Grayson Robinson said that Cook was transferred to El Paso County custody the morning of Jan. 23. He reportedly bonded out later that day.

  • New assisted-living center proposed for South Jeffco

    A proposed assisted-living facility has grabbed the attention of several residents in the Kipling Villas neighborhood.

    But that’s not because of the prospect of new development — neighbors acknowledge it’s bound to happen on the northeast corner of West Coal Mine Avenue and South Kipling Street. Any issue with the proposed Sunrise Senior Living facility comes with its size.
