  • Public hearing set on Rock rezoning

    More than a year has passed since The Rock of Southwest began the process of rezoning. Now it has reached the public stage, with its first hearing before the planning commission Jan. 9.

    Among the reasons the case has been drawn out are that the church adjusted its draft official development plan multiple times to better meet Jefferson County standards. Westridge, the neighborhood where The Rock is located, has also voiced some heavy resistance, from individuals and the homeowner association.

  • Person who stole $100,000 from sports association repaying funds

    The person who stole more than $100,000 from the South Jeffco Sports Association has repaid 40 percent of the stolen money, according to the association’s president, and the remaining 60 percent is due Jan. 23.

    “I feel good about it,” said Jeff Wahl, the association’s president. “Forty percent of the money has already been repaid, with 60 percent payable on the 23rd. The person definitely has incentive to make that second payment, and I think that they want to get it behind them.”

  • SWAT members can share school-shooting insights — but not for a fee

    Several Jeffco Regional SWAT Team members will be allowed to share with other departments their experiences and insights related to the shootings at Columbine and Platte Canyon high schools, but they won’t be allowed to charge a fee, Jeffco Sheriff Ted Mink said Wednesday.

    “Their actions were well intentioned, but they didn’t follow (internal) policies,” Mink said.

  • 29 indicted in multi-state drug ring

    More than two dozen people were indicted last week as part of what investigators call an international and multi-state drug transportation ring, with the West Metro Drug Task Force leading the way, according to Jeffco DA Scott Storey.

    “It took a lot of resources to accomplish this. I can’t minimize that,” Storey said. “The resources that were put into (the investigation) by the West Metro Drug Task Force as well as our office were quite a bit.”

  • Food bank forced to buy food, Action Center sees demand soar, donations decline

    Kenny Kozlowski, 37, was getting by like any average working person. He was employed by a plumbing company, earning between $500 and $600 per week, and making ends meet.

    Kozlowski did construction-related work for more than 20 years but was severely injured in a motocross accident two years ago, forcing him to take a break from heavy construction. And then, when the plumbing company laid him off, he was out of luck.

  • Manor House in foreclosure

    The Manor House, the historic center of Ken-Caryl, is in foreclosure, according to information provided by the Jefferson County public trustee.

    Property owner T&T LLC, a rent-to-own business created in part by Michael Shinn, owes $1,234,081.11 on a $1.8 million loan it secured from Horizon Banks in March 2006. Shinn acquired the Manor House nearly two years ago with the initial intent to turn it into a headquarters for T&T LLC, which his sons now operate. However, the Manor House was ultimately restored to a high-end restaurant and event center, reopening in October 2006.

  • Courier's parent company could be sold

    The family that owns Landmark Communications, parent company of the Columbine Courier, is exploring a sale of company businesses, including its weekly newspaper division and the Weather Channel.

    Frank Batten Jr., Landmark's chairman and chief executive, said in a statement last week that the privately held company had retained JPMorgan and Lehman Brothers to help it look into possible sale scenarios.

  • Congrove cleared in CBI investigation; 'murky' behavior troubles prosecutor

    A special prosecutor investigating allegations that Jeffco Commissioner Jim Congrove inappropriately authorized the use of county money to hire a friend to investigate a county critic and employee will not file charges in the case.

    But a couple of issues related to Congrove’s behavior remain “murky” and “clearly troubling,” according to the prosecutor’s statement, however.

    Congrove did not return a call seeking comment on the report.

  • Sledders make tracks to an old haunt: New Parking area at Sledding Hill Park fills quickly

    While last week’s storms may have been a burden for those traveling the area’s slick roads, the blanket of snow was a welcome sight to sledding enthusiasts.

    Sledding Hill Park was busy in the days following Christmas, thanks to two winter storms that brought more than 8 inches of new snow to the area. For many, the visit was their first chance to make tracks this season.

    Another first, at least for those who visited the park at South Kipling Street and West Ken Caryl Avenue, was the chance to use a new parking lot that was installed last spring.
