  • Chickens and bees all the buzz in Jeffco

    Jeffco is getting ready to have “the talk” about the birds and the bees. 

    This week the county will begin discussing a proposed zoning change that would allow residents to keep chickens and bees in residential-zoned districts. Currently in unincorporated Jeffco, raising chickens and bees is allowed only in agriculturally zoned areas.

  • Gun control in sights at Everett town hall

    State Rep. Justin Everett, R-District 22, held his first town hall meeting as an elected official, and the tense political climate at the state Capitol was reflected in several contentious exchanges. 

    Several people present, including Everett’s Democratic challenger in last November’s election, Mary Parker, challenged Everett on his opposition to gun-control legislation. The discussion became heated at times, with Everett and the gun-control advocates talking over each other.

  • Littleton's Citizens Academy introduces residents to police work

    The Littleton Police Department is once again giving citizens an opportunity to see the inner workings of the agency. 

    The Littleton Citizens Academy is an 11-week course that gives residents a chance to learn about the many facets of law enforcement, said Littleton police Cmdr. Trent Cooper. 

    “What we try to do is give the students a good overall picture of the department,” Cooper said. “We try to make it as hands-on as possible.”

    More than a dozen constituents braved snowy conditions Feb. 20 to share some appetizers with state Sen. Andy Kerr. But they wanted to share more than tapas — the South Jeffco residents at Q’s Pub & Grille that chilly night wanted to hear the first-term Democrat’s opinions on a variety of topics, and to share their own.

  • Jeffco Public Library in the running for prestigious national award

    The Jefferson County Public Library is in the running to be named one of the top libraries in the country.

    Jeffco’s library is a finalist for the National Medal for Museum and Library Services, an award given every year by the Institute of Museum and Library Services. The award is considered to be one of the highest honors a library can receive.

  • Jeffco YouthWorks to host job fair for young adults

    Attention, teens: It’s time to polish your resume and iron your business attire. 

    That’s because Jeffco YouthWorks will host its Young Adult Job Fair on March 5. The fair, which serves all youths in the metro area, will bring businesses, community partners and apprenticeship programs to one location. The fair will offer workshops, application assistance and resume-reviewing rooms to give young people support. 

    For this event, the focus is just on youth jobs, so young people don’t have to compete with older workers.

  • Littleton considers temporary moratorium on pot shops

    More than three months removed from Coloradans’ vote to legalize the use and sale of recreational marijuana, the battles over regulation and logistics are ramping up. 

    The Littleton City Council is the most recent municipality to begin discussion on whether or not to allow marijuana retail shops and clubs inside the city limits. On Feb. 19, the council voted 6-1 to initially approve a moratorium on the establishment of retail marijuana stores and marijuana clubs in the city.

  • Shots fired outside GI Jodi's Bar; no injuries reported

    Several shots reportedly were fired outside GI Jodi's Bar, 11550 W. Meadows Drive, about 1:30 a.m. Saturday morning. No patrons or staff were hit by the bullets.

    A witness said a man tried to leave the bar without paying the tab. As the man left, the witness said, staff members followed him to his truck in an attempt to collect money. When the man reached his truck, he pulled out a gun and fired several shots into the air, then got into the truck and raced out of the parking lot, the witness said.
