  • Flood of comments delays report on Chatfield Reservoir expansion

    Jeffco will have to wait until the end of the year before it can see an Army Corps of Engineers report on the proposed expansion of Chatfield Reservoir. 

    The controversial expansion would raise the reservoir by 12 feet and flood 600 acres to help meet the area’s rising water needs. The corps’ report was originally due at the end of 2012 but was delayed due to the extensive public comment on the project. 

    Monique Farmer, a senior spokeswoman for the corps, confirmed that the public unleashed a barrage of opinions about the plan.

  • Littleton council OKs Nevada Place changes

    The Littleton City Council has approved a contentious measure that will allow the second phase of the Nevada Place residential development to be built. 

    The council voted 4-3 to let Camelback Development modify its plan for a new building at Nevada Street and Powers Avenue, changing the number of living units from 37 two-bedroom apartments to 72 one-bedroom apartments. The council’s approval was needed because the change drops the number of parking spaces per bedroom below the city’s standard requirement.

  • Bus carrying Littleton church group rolls in Grand County

    The Colorado State Patrol is investigating a rollover accident involving a bus chartered by Foothills Bible Church in Littleton.

    The bus was heading to the Crooked Creek Young Life Ranch near Fraser when it rolled while taking a turn in the westbound lane of Grand County Road 50, west of U.S. 40. 

    The bus flipped onto its passenger side and came to rest in a snowbank. The State Patrol described the road conditions at the time as being snowpacked.

  • Cat burglars pounce on four South Jeffco homes

    Cat burglars struck four homes last weekend in the Powderhorn, Westridge and Meadow Ranch subdivisions in South Jeffco. In three of the incidents, residents were home at the time.

    A news release from the Jeffco Sheriff’s Office said the perpetrator or perpetrators entered the homes through unlocked rear doors or windows. Items taken included wallets, purses, jewelry and cash.

  • C-470 Coalition recommends tolls in new lanes to fund expansion

    The C-470 Coalition will decide this month whether to move forward with a recommendation to fund a two-lane expansion of the highway between I-25 and Kipling with a toll on the two new lanes.

    The coalition, which formed in 2011 and includes Jeffco, has been trying to decide on the best funding model to finance the expansion of the 26-mile highway. The Colorado Department of Transportation has identified the beltway as having significant rush-hour traffic congestion.

  • Foothills, county discuss future of Clement Park

    Clement Park isn't getting a face-lift — it's getting a whole new life. 

    Currently the park, built in 1987, needs about $7 million to $8 million in repairs and upgrades, according to the Foothills Park & Recreation District. Foothills, which leases the park from Jeffco Open Space, has been in discussions with the Open Space Department about trying to figure out the best path for the park, not just for 2013 but for 2038 as well.

  • County commissioners approve resolution opposing gun control

    Before a packed room Feb. 5, the Jeffco commissioners voted to approve a resolution supporting the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and opposing any new gun regulations being considered at the state or federal level.

  • Rosier pushes resolution opposing gun control

    The battle taking place over gun control at the federal and state levels has found its way to the Jeffco commissioners.

    Commissioner Don Rosier has introduced a resolution that would call for the county to take a stand against possible new gun-control regulations being debated after the recent mass shootings in Newtown, Conn., and Aurora.

  • Jeffco to test new emergency-notification system on Wednesday

    The new emergency-notification system being used in Jefferson County will be tested Wednesday morning.
    This CodeRED system, which is replacing the problem-plagued FIRST CALL or 911.net, is being used by emergency services providers in Jeffco and Broomfield counties, as well as parts of Arapahoe, Adams, Clear Creek and Douglas counties. It will be tested in Broomfield on Wednesday as well.
    Test calls will begin at 9 a.m. Wednesday and should continue for several hours. To sign up, visit your911.net.

  • Former Golden High School employee arrested on suspicion of embezzlement

    A former employee of Golden High School has been charged with embezzling almost $156,000 from the school.

    Judith Marie Eakins, 53, was employed at the school for about 13 years, including serving as the school's financial secretary from July 2008 until November. She was arrested Tuesday and charged with theft and embezzling public property.
