  • Former Morrison officer pleads guilty to four felonies

    A former Morrison police officer pleaded guilty to four felony counts of embezzlement, attempt to influence a public servant, theft and forgery.

    Anthony Paul Joiner, 38, is accused of stealing more than $132,000 from the town of Morrison between December 2010 and February 2016 through a private fund he created called the “5280 Police Motors Memorial Fund.” He appeared in court Monday morning for a motions hearing but instead coordinated a plea deal with the prosecution.

  • Foothills Park and Rec approves budget

    Foothills Park and Recreation District adopted its 2018 budget, a balanced spending plan of approximately $31.1 million.

    The budget was unanimously approved in a Dec. 12 board meeting. Prior to adoption, the district held a brief public budget hearing in which no community members signed up to speak.

  • A glimpse at the day-to-day tasks of Colorado State Patrol

    Around 4 p.m. — only an hour into his 10-hour shift on Nov. 16 — dispatch called for coverage of a two-vehicle collision on Highway 93 between 82nd Avenue and Indian Head Road.

    Trooper Christian Poeppel, of Troop 1A Golden, responded that he was en route, turning on his lights as he drove north of Golden on Highway 93.

    The scene of the accident was plain, as firefighters and sheriff’s deputies were on-site, blocking off the affected area. Both drivers were still there, with no major injuries.

  • Eagles fall, but not without great effort

    The Dakota Ridge High School boys’ basketball team took a hard-fought loss on Dec. 5, falling 67-54 to the Raiders of Ridgeview High School. The Eagles entered the contest at 1-2 after an overtime loss vs. Fossil Ridge in the third-place game of the Fossil Ridge Tip-off Classic the weekend before.   

  • Rebels, Chargers and Eagles fare well at state

    DENVER — On Friday and Saturday at the Denver Coliseum, Chatfield, Columbine and Dakota Ridge put on some of their best performances at the state spirit competition in a variety of disciplines.
    • Chatfield finished ninth in 5A poms with an 81.05 mark and 13th in 5A co-ed cheer with a score of 66.2.
    • Columbine placed fifth in jazz at 86.8333 and 18th in 5A cheer (71.75).
    • For the Dakota Ridge, the poms team placed 11th in 5A with a 77.5333 score and the cheer team placed 28th (60.45).

  • DeGette says ex-Calif. congressman groped her

    U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette, who represents Colorado’s 1st Congressional District, told MSNBC’s Katy Tur last month that former U.S. Rep. Bob Filner forced himself on her in an elevator during his tenure in Congress as a U.S. Representative for California, sometime between 1997 and 2012.

  • Local zoologist encourages Colorow students to do what they love

    Students at Colorow Elementary learned about animals of all sorts on Dec. 6 when Dave Johnson visited the school.

    Johnson, a zoologist at the Denver Zoo, conservationist and self-proclaimed “animal nerd,” shared his experiences working with animals in Colorado and across the world, and showed photos and treasures from his travels.

  • Two South Jeffco teachers win Jeffco Hero Awards

    A teacher can influence a student for a lifetime.

    This year, two South Jeffco teachers — Barb Weisiger, a gifted and talented teacher at Coronado Elementary School, and Alisha Lindsey, a middle school teacher from Bradford K-8 North — were recognized with a Jeffco Hero Award last month. It’s the second year in a row that two of the winners have come from the area.

  • Suspect sought in beauty supply store robbery

    The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is searching for a man accused of robbing a Sally Beauty in South Jeffco on Monday morning.

    The suspect, described by the sheriff’s office as a thin, black male, was armed when he robbed the beauty supply store around 9:20 a.m. He was last seen wearing a black cap, black bandana, black pants and a light beige coat and carrying a white plastic bag with a red heart on it. The suspect is said to be around 6 feet tall and in his 20s.

  • Man steals car, robs pharmacy and bank in South Jeffco

    A man has been arrested after stealing a car in Lakewood and robbing several businesses in South Jeffco over the weekend.
