    Chargers stun Regis Jesuit, headed to state quarterfinals
    AURORA     — Ninth-seeded Chatfield scored four runs in the fourth inning and added an insurance run in the seventh to upend host Regis Jesuit at the Class 5A District 2 tournament on May 12 and qualify for the eight-team, double-elimination state bracket.
    Chatfield (13-8), which opened the district tournament with a win over Douglas County, has allowed just one run in its last four games.

  • Rebels’ Tait leads group headed to 5A state meet

    It was in the back of Jaylee Tait’s mind just how poorly she played at the 5A regional girls golf tournament in 2012. It was her worst round of the year. But she had to get over that because this year’s tournament was at that same Raccoon Creek Golf Course.
    Initially, though, it didn’t appear that the Columbine junior had let go of the past, because she bogeyed the first three holes May 6 before she found a groove.
    “I slowed my swing down and focused more on the fundamentals instead of trying to hit the perfect shot,” Tait said.

  • Wet weather, poor officiating doom Chatfield

    PARKER — A guy on a John Deere had to plow the field at halftime because of water.
    Chatfield’s girls soccer team saw its season come to an end with a 3-1 loss to Chaparral in monsoon-like conditions in the first round of the 5A state playoffs on May 8 at Sports Authority Stadium.
    Rain poured almost the entire game and several puddles formed on the synthetic turf field and the sidelines.

  • Mountain Vista uses long ball to stop Dakota Ridge

    An amazing season for Dakota Ridge’s baseball team came to a sour conclusion May 11. After overcoming a 3-0 deficit to defeat Brighton 4-3 in the district semifinals, the host Eagles lost to Mountain Vista 8-6 in a hard-fought championship game at Dakota Ridge High School.
    Down 4-3 in the bottom of the fourth Dakota Ridge had the bases loaded with one out when Mountain Vista sophomore Marc Mumper struck out Eagles seniors Nate Liffick and AJ Valerio to get out of trouble.

  • Area tennis players weather the storm at state

    Mother Nature did her best to wreak havoc on the 5A girls tennis state championships, washing out the first day of the scheduled three-day tournament. But it was just a blip on the radar as Columbine’s Lillie Pettibone and a pair of Chatfield doubles teams took to  the court to face the state’s best.

  • Commissioners approve apartments at Belleview, Simms

    A proposed residential development in South Jeffco is set to create up to 290 multifamily apartment homes in a gated community at West Belleview Avenue and South Simms Street. 

    Jeffco’s county commissioners voted 3-0 to rezone 14 acres from an agricultural designation to planned development to let the Belleview Village project proceed. About a dozen people from surrounding neighborhoods, some representing homeowner groups, spoke against the proposal.

  • Running to remember

    Columbine High School and the surrounding community took to the pavement again Saturday for the eighth annual Run for Remembrance through Clement Park. 

    The 5K run/walk raised money for Craig Hospital, the Columbine Memorial and the Frank DeAngelis Columbine High School Academic Foundation.

  • Boggs blocks filming at school board meeting

    Jeffco schools Superintendent Cindy Stevenson summoned security at last Thursday’s board meeting when school board member Laura Boggs tried to prevent a district employee from recording video of a speaker.

    Broomfield resident Kelly Scott was addressing the board about his desire for schools to get back to Judeo-Christian roots and teachings when Boggs stood and blocked the iPad camera of communications manager Marlene Desmond.
