  • Columbine High seeks votes in online competition

     Columbine High School is hoping to power its students to a high-tech future with a little bleach.

    The school is currently third in Clorox's Power A Bright Future competition, which will award a $50,000 grant to the school that gathers the most votes online, and $25,000 grants to the next six vote-getters.

    Columbine is currently third in the “explore” category, which focuses on enriching students' learning experience. If Columbine wins the $50,000 grant, it plans to purchase 60 iPads and Apple TVs with HDMI cables for every teacher.

  • Jeffco deputies kill gunman outside King Soopers

    A gunman was fatally shot by Jeffco sheriff's deputies on Saturday night outside the King Soopers at West Belleview Avenue and South Kipling Street.

    The man with the gun was identified as Evan H. Bynum, 40, a resident of South Jeffco. No other injuries were reported among customers, employees or sheriff's officers.

    Deputies responded at 9:15 p.m. after a caller reported that a man with a handgun was wandering around the store talking to himself.

  • Foothills staffer joins Colorado Golf Hall of Fame

    Foothills Park and Recreation golf director Tom Woodard started playing in a junior program at Denver’s City Park at 9 years of age, when instructors correctly recognized a budding golf prodigy.

    The family had moved from Midland, Texas, to Denver into a house just two blocks away from the course, where some of the neighborhood kids worked as caddies.

    “I just followed them down there,” said Tom Woodard, 56, Foothills’ golf director for the last six years. “It just took off from there.”

  • Man arrested after leading authorities on chase from Jeffco to Denver

    A man suspected of ramming a police car and then leading Jeffco deputies and state troopers on a high-speed chase has been arrested.

    Jarrett Stoner, 26, is suspected of leading law enforcement on a chase through southern Jefferson County and into Denver on Wednesday morning, ramming a deputy’s patrol car and hitting two other vehicles in the process.

    The deputy whose car was hit and the other motorists were not injured, said sheriff's spokesman Mark Techmeyer.

    Hang gliders and paragliders catching the currents at Lookout Mountain are enjoying the fruits of their joint labors with Jefferson County Open Space: an upgraded trail to the popular launch site on Windy Saddle.

     

    The airborne adventurers earn their rides by hauling gear weighing up to 80 pounds to the launch area — and a deteriorating foot trail was making that undertaking both unsafe and unpleasant.

  • Sigg to be tried as adult in Jessica Ridgeway slaying

    Austin Sigg, 17, who is accused of killing 10-year-old Jessica Ridgeway, will be tried as an adult. A Jefferson County judge also ordered Sigg to be transferred from the Mount View Youth Services Center to a special housing unit in the Jeffco jail. 

    At a hearing Tuesday morning, a prosecutor presented two witnesses from the Division of Youth Corrections who asked the judge to approve the transfer.
