    Coach Traci Nemechek has transformed the Eagles into perennial state title contenders, in addition to dominating Class 5A Jefferson County.

    Well, there was a time that the Dakota Ridge boys basketball team was one of the state’s best. Recently, though, the Eagles have fallen on hard times.

  • Getting in the spirit: Sunday liquor sales come to Colorado

    Teresa Teaff walked down the aisle Sunday at Tipsy’s Liquor World browsing bottles of wine from the southern region of France. Sunday spirit shopping was a welcome experience for the Tennessee resident, who was in town on business. Buying liquor on a Sunday was also a welcome experience for many Coloradans.

    July 6 was the first Sunday that Colorado liquor stores have been open since before Prohibition. Gov. Bill Ritter signed a bill in April repealing the state’s blue law, joining 34 other states with Sunday liquor sales.

  • Area theater troupes team up for fund-raiser

    The Main Street Players, Littleton’s longest-running community theater group, and the Ovation Players are looking for a bit of support in exchange for dinner and a show July 12.

    The troupes will be hosting a fund-raising gala July 12 at Columbine Country Club. Tickets cost $45 and include dinner and a scene from “Eleemosynary” and “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.” The groups will also perform 11 numbers from other musicals staged during the 25-year history of the Main Street Players.

  • Mailing it in: Election officials pushing postal option

    Jeffco election officials are continuing to suggest that registered voters sign up to be permanent mail voters and join the 58 percent of registered county residents — 152,038 as of June 30 — who have chosen that option.

    Becoming a mail voter will help ease the Election Day burden at the polls and ensure that residents don’t feel rushed to vote, said Pam Anderson, Jeffco’s clerk and recorder. She added that many voters also have a hard time making it to their polling places on Election Day.

  • School board member pleads guilty to assault

    Jeffco school board member and state House candidate Vince Chowdhury pleaded guilty July 8 to a third-degree assault charge stemming from accusations that he slapped and choked his 16-year-old daughter.

    A harassment charge and a charge for violating a protective order were dismissed during the proceeding in Jefferson County Court. Chowdhury, 48, was given a supervised, one-year deferred sentence and ordered to complete anger management and parenting classes. If he completes the classes and stays out of trouble, the case will be dismissed in one year.

  • Eagles bow out earlier than usual in tourney

    Young arms and quiet bats put Dakota Ridge in an unusual spot.

    Hosting its wooden bat tournament for the 11th season under coach Jeff Legault, the Eagles failed to reach the final for the first time in 10 years after suffering narrow losses to Ralston Valley and Green Mountain.

    Dakota Ridge notched victories over Columbine’s lower-level squad and Centaurus, but the defeats kept the Eagles out of the semifinals and saw them wrap up play June 29 with an 11-3 victory over Silver Creek.

  • Exempla may move out of The Peak

    The Exempla Family and Occupational Medicine clinic at The Peak Community and Wellness Center may be on its way out.

    Yannick LeRolland, director of IT services for Foothills Park & Recreation District, said a deal may be in the works to let Exempla vacate the space it occupies in The Peak in exchange for forgiveness of nearly $50,000 Foothills owes Exempla.

  • Chargers win Wood Bat Tourney

    WHEAT RIDGE — The Rogers made Everitt Middle School their neighborhood Sunday, June 29.

    And no, they weren’t playing well with others.

    Mr. Tyler Rogers gave up one run in the semifinal match of the annual Dakota Ridge Dave Schmidt Wood Bat Tournament and Mr. Taylor Rogers tossed a one-hitter in the championship game as the Chargers defeated Wheat Ridge 3-0 on a postcard afternoon.
