  • Botanic Gardens' changes will go through public hearing after all

    After some confusion about whether the Denver Botanic Gardens at Chatfield would submit its amphitheater modification plans to a county approval process, a hearing date has been set, and the public will have the chance to weigh in.

    The plan will be aired before the county planning commission at 3:15 p.m. July 23 at the Jefferson County Courts and Administration Building in Golden.

    Crime in Jefferson County and Colorado is on the decline, according to the annual Crime in Colorado report released last week by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.

  • Commissioners, Congrove face civil trial in harassment case

    County Commissioner Jim Congrove and the Board of County Commissioners face a civil trial in September in a case brought by a woman claiming Congrove harassed her and got her fired from her job.

    Lori Stille, a former employee with Chase Bank, alleges that Congrove harassed her and her daughter, and tried to get her fired from the bank in retaliation for helping longtime county critic and onetime boyfriend Mike Zinna in a civil lawsuit he filed against Congrove several years ago.

    SOUTH JEFFCO — The temperature in the Denver area reached a balmy 93 degrees on June 22, but things got even hotter in an off-limits hot tub occupied by two lovebirds on June 23. A deputy was dispatched to the Fairways apartment complex on West Bowles Avenue about 2:15 a.m. that morning, after a complex security guard found two young lovers in the hot tub. The male half of the duo admitted that the couple knew they weren’t supposed to be in the tub, and he apologized.

    I needed caffeine. I woke up feeling like my brain was in an unclean fish tank and a hundred miles away. A shower didn’t help rejuvenate my senses, and I stumbled around trying to find a shirt not wrinkled like a dead elephant’s carcass. There were none. This wasn’t all that unusual. Iron in hand, I cleared a space on my countertop and melted a hole in a $40 shirt. I looked at the bottom of the iron and then to the clock above the stove — I was running late for a meeting.

  • Trial continued in case of warring metro districts

    A trial in the longstanding case of two warring metro districts has been continued after one of the attorneys on the Ken-Caryl Metro District side suffered a medical emergency.

    The trial pitting the Ken-Caryl district and the Plains Metropolitan District in Jefferson County District Court was scheduled to start Monday, June 16. A new trial date has not been set, although the attorney, Richard Shearer of Stapleton Ireland of Denver, is reportedly back at work on a part-time basis.
