  • Windels outpaces Griffin in fund-raising for commission race

    Faye Griffin and Sue Windels — the two veteran politicians vying to replace outgoing District 1 County Commissioner Jim Congrove — raised just half the money that the District 2 candidates pulled in during the filing period that ended July 17.

    Griffin, a Republican and the Jefferson County treasurer, reported raising $9,832.85 between Dec. 2, 2007, and July 17, 2008, according to a state filing. Windels, the term-limited Democratic state senator from District 19, reported raising $26,387.27 during the same time period.

  • No foundation for her story

    SOUTH JEFFCO — One South Jeffco woman apparently had so much on her mind Aug. 1 that she was oblivious to her own attempt to swipe makeup from the King Soopers on West Belleview Avenue. A deputy responded to the store shortly before noon that day on a theft report. The store's security guard said he watched the woman through the surveillance system grab a Maybelline product, carry it to a different part of the store and put it in her purse. The 48-year-old woman, with nary a blush, said it was all a mistake. "That was an accident," the accidental thief said.

  • Website urges recall of Chowdhury

    Three women are organizing an effort to recall school board member Vince Chowdhury in the wake of his conviction for third-degree assault.

    Chowdhury, 48, pleaded guilty July 8 to misdemeanor assault after a June arrest on suspicion of choking and slapping his 16-year-old daughter. Though he has stopped campaigning for the Democratic nomination in House District 22, Chowdhury has not responded to the school board’s request that he resign his seat. His current term on the school board would end in 2009.

  • South Jeffco voters will see two races on primary ballot

    The four-way Republican primary in the 6th Congressional District and the Democratic primary in House District 22 are the only races South Jeffco voters have on their plates Aug. 12.The 6th Congressional District — which includes part of Park and most of Jefferson, Arapahoe, Elbert and Douglas counties — is best known for the anti-immigration crusade of five-term Republican Tom Tancredo.   • Commission candidate proposes 4-day workweek for county employees

    Jason Bane, the Lakewood Democrat challenging incumbent Republican Kevin McCasky for the District 2 county commission seat, is floating the idea of a four-day workweek for county employees.

    Bane is short on specifics. He did not say if he would favor shutting down certain county functions on certain days or how much money the plan would save. But the 31-year-old former journalist and current communications specialist, who's taking his first swing at elected office after working on several campaigns, would like to get a discussion going.

  • District 2 commission candidates raise $71,000 in latest reporting period

    The race for the District 2 county commission seat is heating up, with the two candidates raising nearly $71,000 since October 2007. The Democratic challenger edged the incumbent by roughly $4,000 in the latest reporting period.

    Incumbent Republican Kevin McCasky reported raising $33,330 in the latest period, according to state filings, giving him a total of $75,274 in total funds raised since the beginning of his re-election effort.

    His challenger, Lakewood Democrat Jason Bane, reported raising $37,455 since he entered the race in January 2008.

    SOUTH JEFFCO — In a major setback to golf course etiquette, a bogeyman punched holes in a putting green one dark night recently at the Meadows Golf Course, spelling out a profane word and leaving course personnel tee-d off. The vandal ended his spree in the verdant setting by sculpting a male appendage in a sand trap.
