  • South Jeffco lands in Dem-leaning congressional district

South Jeffco has been lumped in with Denver in a congressional redistricting map approved Nov. 10 by state Judge Robert Hyatt, placing a largely conservative area into a Democratic stronghold — at least for now.

Much of the southern unincorporated portion of the county, formerly in Congressional District 6 and represented by Republican Mike Coffman, is currently in Democrat Diana Degette’s territory.

  • A bridge too useless?

All three Jeffco commissioners conceded last week that, in hindsight, construction of the massive pedestrian bridge over Wadsworth Boulevard was a poor use of federal and local sales-tax money compared to other road projects throughout South Jeffco.

  • A prescription for danger

More people are dying every year in Jefferson County because of prescription-drug overdoses, a trend mirroring national statistics that the coroner’s office attributes to increased prescribing of opiate painkillers.

By year’s end, the office predicts, 45 residents will die from unintentional drug toxicity. And though 2010 saw a slight drop in prescription-drug deaths, the anticipated number for 2011 would represent a 73 percent rise over those of 2005.

  • Columbine chugging right along

LAKEWOOD — The further one goes into the playoffs games aren’t supposed to be as lopsided as Columbine’s 35-14 win over Highlands Ranch was on Nov. 19 at Jeffco Stadium. Not even the final score does justice for the way the Rebels’ defense contained the visiting Falcons.
“Our defense has played great all year to be honest with you. They bend a little, but never break. They keep teams out of the end zone,” Columbine head coach Andy Lowry said.
