  • County working on plan to accommodate new judges

    Jeffco is in the process of hiring a consulting firm to determine how to accommodate two new judges by July 1, and it may require a reworking of space in the government center.

    "One thing we're telling the architectural construction firms to do is look at all the space, and we're literally telling them that nothing is sacred," said County Administrator Jim Moore. "If it makes sense to convert the whole building into a courthouse, and move administrative (functions) somewhere else, we may entertain that."

  • Jeffco schools pull beef from lunch menus

    Jeffco Public Schools is one of several districts in Colorado that has pulled beef from its lunch menus this week in response to an undercover Humane Society investigation that showed improper practices in a slaughterhouse.

    Commodity beef — loose meat made into hamburger or otherwise processed — from Westland/Hallmark Meat Co. is the culprit for the lunchtime adjustment. Humane Society insider video showed one of Westland’s slaughterhouses processing “downer cows,” or cows that were abused or too sick to stand.

    Sunrise Assisted Living held a second community hearing Jan. 29 as part of the rezoning process for a 4.2-acre site near the corner of South Kipling Street and West Coal Mine Avenue. Aside from a few remaining concerns over the facility’s proposed 45-foot height, residents nearest the site showed anxiety over the grading of the land and a new road running just outside their backyards.

    After a drought that has lasted for any length of time, a downpour of rain is a welcome sight.

    That is what it was like for the Chatfield girls basketball team Feb. 1. The Chargers, which had recently lost three games in a row, gladly took the rain of points and picked up a whopping 73-43 Class 5A Jefferson County League victory over Standley Lake.
