  • Two students shot at Deer Creek Middle School

    A 32-year-old gunman opened fire Tuesday afternoon outside Deer Creek Middle School, wounding two students, before faculty members tackled and disarmed him.

    Bruco Strongeagle Eastwood, who is accused of shooting the students with a high-powered rifle, was quickly subdued by faculty members and held down until he was taken into custody by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office. Math teacher David Benke reportedly tackled the suspect, and at least two other adults assisted.

      AURORA - Jaw dropping gave way to jaw breaking Feb. 26 for the Dakota Ridge Eagles. In what could go down as the wildest games the athletes on either side will ever be a part of, the Eagles and Grandview Wolves went into double-overtime to decide the winner of their second round Class 5A state playoff game. Big shots? Plenty. Heated moments? Tons. Crazy turnovers? Too many. Drama?

  • School shooting suspect held on $1 million bond

    The suspect in Tuesday’s shooting at Deer Creek Middle School, 32-year-old Bruco Strongeagle Eastwood, was advised shortly after 11 a.m. Wednesday of a $1 million bond and the possible charges against him.

    Eastwood could be charged with two counts of attempted murder in the shooting, which sent two students to local hospitals, critically injuring 14-year-old Matthew Thieu. Other charges may also be filed, though a spokeswoman for the Jeffco district attorney’s office said she could not comment on any upcoming charges.

  • South Jeffco congregation assembles hygiene items for Haiti

    Members of a local church mustered some gusto Feb. 15 and assembled more than 1,000 hygiene kits to be sent to Haiti.

    About 80 volunteers bustled about in the warm glow of stained glass on Presidents Day at Faith Community Church in South Jeffco, forming assembly lines to pack toothbrushes, soap and other basic-needs items into plastic bags.

  • Deer Creek shooting victim recovering, in good spirits

    Fourteen-year-old Matt Thieu, the Deer Creek Middle School student critically injured in last week’s shooting, is recovering well and showed remarkably good spirits Feb. 26 during an interview at Children’s Hospital. Thieu was discharged this week

    “It’s getting tiring in here,” Thieu told the Columbine Courier from his room at the hospital. The eighth-grader, who spends his free time skateboarding and enjoying the company of friends, added he is looking forward to returning to school and seeing his buddies.

    Mr. Biggs is not family friendly

    Editor’s note: The following letter was originally submitted to the Jefferson County Liquor Licensing Authority.

    I am writing to express my concern about the presence of the Mr. Biggs establishment in my neighborhood.

    A few years ago, my husband and I took our then 3-year-old there for an afternoon of fun. I believe the business was “Fat City” then. We had a nice time and felt safe and comfortable there.

  • Deer Creek to hold open house on Friday

    Deer Creek Middle School will hold an open house for parents and students on Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., a chance for students to gather any belongings left behind after the shootings on Tuesday.

    Students can also see teachers and visit the building to ease any anxiety about returning to school.

    Deer Creek is planning to resume classes on Monday with a regular school day for all students. Buses will run on

    their usual schedules.

    Counselors will be available in every classroom on Monday in case students or staff need to talk with

    someone.

  • Chargers outlast Rocky Mountain

    When it comes to rebounding, Chatfield’s Trevor Wages is a selfish player.

    “I want every board. I don’t want anybody else to get a board,” he said after Chatfield’s 79-73 second-round playoff win over a tough Rocky Mountain squad.

    While Wages wouldn’t get every rebound on the night, he would come pretty darn close, pulling down 20 rebounds, eight coming on the offensive end.

  • Myer leads big-shot Rebels over Rams

    LAKEWOOD — The Columbine Rebels were Ram tough Feb. 17.

    On the road and looking for a vital victory to move up the ladder of the Class 5A Jefferson County League, the Rebels overcame a sluggish start and eight lead changes to pull away in the fourth quarter for a 57-52 victory.

    Columbine trailed 42-40 early in the fourth quarter before Neil Myer banked home a 3-pointer to give the Rebels the lead for good, sparking a 10-0 run that gave them the separation needed to hold on for victory.

    Unfortunately for Myer, he did not call bank.
