  • Farmers take it to Eagles

    LAKEWOOD — The two facets of offensive football were laid bare on a sunny Saturday at Jefferson County Stadium.

    The Dakota Ridge Eagles passed and ran for small chunks of yardage Sept. 20, moving the ball deliberately and delicately down the field against the Wheat Ridge Farmers.

    The Farmers, however, went for minimum effort and maximum gain – big plays and big results.

  • Karate instructor nabs burglary suspect

    A burglary suspect got a rude awakening Sept. 16 after emerging from Front Range Christian Elementary School.

    The suspect exited the back of the school into an alley, and he was confronted by Kevin Kowalczik, a martial arts instructor and co-owner of ProRank Karate.

    "We were training and getting ready for a competition, doing some extra training for one of the classes," Kowalczik said. "I happened to look out the back door, and I saw a guy walking down the alley looking kind of shady."

  • Chargers blank Rebels

    LAKEWOOD — For a little more than 40 minutes, the Chatfield Chargers boys soccer team threw the bathtub, cabinets, a set of dishes and a chair at the Columbine Rebels.

    Then the Chargers threw the proverbial kitchen sink and the floodgates opened.

    The Chargers hammered away at Lakewood Memorial Field before finally breaking through in the 44th minute to spark 3-0 Class 5A Jefferson County League rivalry victory on Sept. 18.

  • Local veterinarian treats bobcat hit by car

    A bobcat that was hit by a car on C-470 the morning of Sept. 23 should make a full recovery, said the doctor who performed three hours of surgery on the animal.

    Dr. Dan Brod, the doctor who treated the 8-month-old female at Deer Creek Animal Hospital in South Jeffco, said the surgery went well, but the young feline will need some rest and recovery time.

    "If the cat does way too much too soon, that would be bad," Brod said. "The cat is semi-confined, and we're taking our time."

  • Chatfield takes it to Columbine

    Parker Lewis got caught watching the scoreboards.

    It was hard to blame him.

    With Lewis and his Chatfield teammates making short work of their rivalry match against Columbine, it seemed at like a race for who was going to be done first.

    While that honor might have fallen to Chatfield No. 2 singles player Jensen Teague, the Chargers were happy with the 6-1 victory over the Rebels on Sept. 18 at the Ken-Caryl Ranch House.
