Community sponsors needed for community event
    Editor:
Thank you for helping us announce to the community the exciting return of the Red, White & You event to Clement Park on July 1.
Because of the financial challenges that the Foothills Park & Recreation District has been facing since 2008 after a failed mill-levy election, the decision was made to cancel the event because the district could no longer afford to provide funding.

It really is time to step up
In his recent column “Time for Jeffco citizens to step up,” editor Doug Bell is correct to ignore the advice of those who tell him to relax, that he should just accept the back-room, back-scratching deals that appear to be the norm in Jefferson County. I hope he always ignores this advice. Change will come only when enough people step up, take a stand, and demand much higher levels of integrity and genuine transparency from the leaders we elect to public office.

All Ken-Caryl homeowners should be considered
    Editor:
Certain Ken-Caryl Ranch Master Association board members, Open Space committee members and members of the secretive Trails Club want to expand and re-route our private trails at the expense of all homeowners. This will entail substantial additional cost and create an influx of non-Ken-Caryl trail users. A very few want to spend the dues of the majority for their own narcissistic purposes — a classic case of the “tail wagging the dog.”

    Who deserves blame and shame?
    Editor,
I am disappointed to read letters like Cal Johnston’s published in the Feb. 2 Columbine Courier concerning the Tucson tragedy (“Venomous rantings have consequences”). Was it coincidental that Mr. Johnson attacked a list of conservatives “for helping to create a climate of hatred toward government, government officials and politicians of opposing views in the U.S.”? Not likely. Was it politically convenient? You bet.

    Venomous rantings have consequences
    Editor:
Shame, shame, shame on Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity, Mike Rosen, Sarah Palin, et al and Tea Party Extremists for helping to create a climate of hatred toward government, government officials and politicians of opposing views in the U.S. Your daily venomous rantings have consequences on susceptible individuals, encouraging acts of violence and murder.

    Facts about schools troubling
    Editor:
The Comprehensive Annual Financial Report for Jefferson County Schools is out and is available for community review at www.JeffcoPublicSchools.org.
Here are a few quotes taken straight from this report:
    • As enrollment declines, some variable costs are avoided (approximately 40 percent).
