Spillar content with her state finish

LAKEWOOD — McKenna Spillar walked around with a smile on her face. She wasn’t the least bit concerned that she’d just finished sixth in the 3,200 meters. This was, after all, a year after the Dakota Ridge senior had surprised even herself by winning the event at the 5A state track and field championships.
But on May 16 at Jefferson County Stadium, sixth place was as good as it would get, and that was OK.

Rebels’ Tait leads group headed to 5A state meet

It was in the back of Jaylee Tait’s mind just how poorly she played at the 5A regional girls golf tournament in 2012. It was her worst round of the year. But she had to get over that because this year’s tournament was at that same Raccoon Creek Golf Course.
Initially, though, it didn’t appear that the Columbine junior had let go of the past, because she bogeyed the first three holes May 6 before she found a groove.
“I slowed my swing down and focused more on the fundamentals instead of trying to hit the perfect shot,” Tait said.

Mountain Vista uses long ball to stop Dakota Ridge

An amazing season for Dakota Ridge’s baseball team came to a sour conclusion May 11. After overcoming a 3-0 deficit to defeat Brighton 4-3 in the district semifinals, the host Eagles lost to Mountain Vista 8-6 in a hard-fought championship game at Dakota Ridge High School.
Down 4-3 in the bottom of the fourth Dakota Ridge had the bases loaded with one out when Mountain Vista sophomore Marc Mumper struck out Eagles seniors Nate Liffick and AJ Valerio to get out of trouble.

Area tennis players weather the storm at state

Mother Nature did her best to wreak havoc on the 5A girls tennis state championships, washing out the first day of the scheduled three-day tournament. But it was just a blip on the radar as Columbine’s Lillie Pettibone and a pair of Chatfield doubles teams took to  the court to face the state’s best.

Chatfield relay team makes believers with third-place finish

LAKEWOOD — Maybe the rest of the state wasn’t expecting it since Chatfield’s 4x800 relay team was seeded 16th entering the 5A boys state track and field championships May 16, but Panos Smyrnios, Nathan Moore, Tyler Hale and Larry Huff believed in themselves.
One by one, they picked off the state’s best at Jefferson County Stadium until they finished third in 7 minutes, 59.86 seconds. It may have been unexpected to the rest of the state but not surprising to the Chargers.

Tallying the 2013 legislative scorecard

The Colorado legislature adjourned May 8 after completing the work of the first session of the 69th General Assembly. Highly contentious issues and partisan wrangling characterized the session. Democrats controlled the House, the Senate and the governor’s office after a two-year period in which control of the legislature was split, as Republicans controlled the House in 2011 and 2012 by a narrow 33-32 margin.

Chargers stun Regis Jesuit, headed to state quarterfinals
AURORA — Ninth-seeded Chatfield scored four runs in the fourth inning and added an insurance run in the seventh to upend host Regis Jesuit at the Class 5A District 2 tournament on May 12 and qualify for the eight-team, double-elimination state bracket.
Chatfield (13-8), which opened the district tournament with a win over Douglas County, has allowed just one run in its last four games.
